Don't quote me but can't you just download the 1.31 firmware and run setup as usual? It should be able to install any firmware version as long as you follow the proper setup procedure.

I'm not sure. You should email the Pioneer tech support and if you find anything out post it here.

    YES!

Since a few days you can downgrade to every fw you want with your Px04!
I downgraded from 1.32 to 1.31 (both official) with success in 5 mins.
BTW, using the flashtools under xp is not recommended and most times it will not work... 8)

    Hi Folks,

I bought an A04 a few months ago and have only good things to say about it. I use it almost exclusively to save my DV movies to DVD-R. My unit came with FW 1.20 on it and I almost upgraded to 1.33 a few days ago but fortunately I read the threads in this forum before I did... 8)

First of all, does anybody know if there is an actual threat of malfunction if using 4X discs with FW1.20 (not that I would ever use one consciously at least) or is this just a clever trick to get everyone to upgrade to 1.33??

Right now I am contemplating either staying at 1.20 (no problems to report using Pioneer DVD-R/RW, Maxell 2X DVD-R and 1X no-names (supposedly Riteks...?) or upgrading to 1.31. Does anybody know if 1.31 actually fixes the 4X discs issue (if any)? How to I go about upgrading to 1.31? can I use the "1.32 or lower to 1.31" upgrade? I tried looking for the official 1.31 upgrade on the Pioneer site but not surprisingly, it's nowhere to be found...

I don't really care about the "2X4all" option since I usually burn a DVD-R about twice a month... I've seen 1.31 RPC-1 2X FW's is there such a beast as a 1.31 RPC-1 (no 2X) ? I haven't played anything but region 1 DVDs so far and have not ripped any DVDs either (I'd rather pay the $20 and get the official package than copy it but that's just me... ). I guess I'd like to get my drive region-free as a matter of principle more than anything else...

Do I stand to gain anything at all by upgrading to 1.31? especially since I have no problems currently...

    Thanks,
    Daniel

P.S. I'd like to thank everyone on VCDHelp (administrators and users) for the invaluable information that you supply. I've been lurking around for many many months (ever since I got my set-top DVD player and started experimenting with VCDs on my CD-RW...)

First of all you should read this topic:
    http://www.dvd-recordable.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showcontent&id=33

BTW, "1.31 official" is an inofficial leaked copy of the firmware...

And, if you have no device/media problems so far with 1.20 and will NEVER use 4x certified media then stay with fw 1.20.

Thanks _chef_ for the great reference,

More and more I think I'll stick with 1.20 and possibly keep a copy of 1.31 in my back pocket for the day that 4X media becomes very common. Unless Pioneer comes out with a "better" FW in the meantime.

    Regards,
    Daniel

where can a copy of fw 1.31 for A04/104 be obtained from??

  18. hmmm... i don't know if i'm wrong but.............
i'm using the 1.33 official firmware and had no problems so far (data or video dvd's).

My burnings include TDK, Creation, Verbatim, Princo & datasafe DVD-r's.

No problem... not ONE bad disc....all good so far.
Maybe the 1.33 is not that bad.... It's all about rumors and maybe Pioneer cuts 2x on some media with the new firmware 1.33 because problems have been reported...

The goal is perfect media-compatibility-and lifetime and NOT speed.

    It fixed my problems.

From what I hear Pioneer had tried to strong arm the cheaper media manufacturers into paying royalties to use the -r/-rw format and when they refused Pioneer released the new firmware 1.33 that removed these manufacturers from the firmwares database and the use of Pioneer products (reminds me of something Microshaft would do). If that's true it really sucks and it will keep me from buying any of their newer drives. After flashing mine with 1.33 suddenly my rewritables that I have and have been using with this drive would no longer even be recognized. WOW, this firmware is so much better, it fixed all of my non existent problems and pretty much rendered my burner useless, Oh unless I go out and by the $5.00 a disk media that's manufactured by, hmmmm, PIONEER !!!
After flashing to 1.33 and finding out I can't use any of my cheap media anymore I then found out they lock you in and won't let you put it back the way it was, "WORKING". I then searched high and low for a fix, the first one I found entailed removing and disassembling the burner, performing micro soldering, flashing and reassembling, I guess it lets you put it back but that sounded sorta drastic and I read stories of peoples burners not working at all after the process. Then some super hacker, bless his soul found a way around this and modified the flash tool to search out the protection keys and let you flash it back to whatever firmware you want to use, I have read people are partial to 1.31 and that's what I'm using now. That guy or guys who helped us poor souls are saints and should be comended for his/her/their brilliant hacking/programming skills and for letting me/us have my/our drive/drives back that had been held hostage by Pioneer for about a month.
