  1. After reading up the messages here, I want to buy a DV343. Just a moment ago I went a shop, there I use the remote control to try to change the region code, but it didn't work, the region is also 2 (For Japan). I don't know why.

The player I checked is a silver DV343, not the black for America. So maybe it's different. Another thing I want to know if it is needed to upgrade a firmware above all ? If yes, where can I download it and how to upgrade it??

  2. Oh no, I tried the region hack method posted under
    http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayershack.php?select=Pioneer%20DV-343
But it is not working, anyone having the same problem. I just bought this DVD player in Canada, and it has a black color case.

Also, I have a question, is it true that my TV has to play PAL in order to view DVD of other regions, say region 2 for Europe?

For the DV343, I believe it's not a (software) firmware update but you've gotta replace the chip. Look in your local "buy & sell" type newspapers and you should see some vendors offering such services.

The last time I was in Japan, the DV343 (DV535) was gold, not silver.
