if a dvd player doesnt play vcd or svcd is it becase of the format or because the player cannot recognise cdr/cdrw?

If VCD it is almost certain a CD-R/W problem cause most support original VCD.

I suggest you check the DVD Players list on the left. Make sure you read the reports an comments for your player as many times these can give additional insight. Some of the newest DVD players do not support any VCD format.
