I wanted to know if anyone knows how to change interrupt (IRQ) settings on motherboards that have them grayed out. I am using WinXP and I'm attempting to capture video using a capture card that is using the same interrupt as my sound card, causing capture problems.

I've tried to change the irq settings ind the device mananger with no success (grayed out). The computer just locks up, I tried looking in the bios, but today's bios don't appear to have options for assigning irqs to pci card slots.

I know how to configure it correctly if only I could bypass the settings that the plug-n-play has determined adequate.

The computer seems to make all the decisions for you but sometimes they aren't good ones.

So if there is a way to bypass their settings please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Ernest

good luck -- best chance is to move the cards around .. though it will report the same irq -- there is an order of priority ..

different motherboards do it different so best chance is make sure capture card is in bussmaster slot near the agp card (1 down from it sometimes) .. and sound card near the bottom .. this isnt always the case though .. ..

XP and modern MB 's are pretty good at sharing irq's but yea -- problems can happen ..

oh another way -- though im not sure this still works is to change in your bios that it is a non acpi system and re-install your OS .... this means no irq sharing at all ..

dont know if this would still work though on more modern systems and XP (it was a win2000 trick) ..

  4. BJ_M,
Installing Win XP Pro as a standard PC works. This is how I installed my Win XP Pro and it sure helped with the irq problems.

    All,
I also found this site which tweaks win xp for video editing. If you feel comfortable editing the registry, then by all means give this a shot.

this is another video editing xp tweak thing ..
    http://www.videoguys.com/WinXP.html

i run XP now on one machine because i was forced to and other than a few weird things with being unable to move or delete or even open targa files (sometimes) -- no other problems .. i hate the way XP treats zip fills and tried to turn it all off -- but its still a little screwed ..

i have only one app which will not run on it in GUI mode but does in command line mode (go figure) ..

    Thanks for the help,

I will try those links and see if I can find something that works. Things would be a lot easier if computer manufacturers would let us have the abililty to change our own irqs.

Yes there could be auto configurations as well, but for those of us who understand the computer we have special needs that an auto configurated system would only complicate.

    Thanks again,
    Ernest
