As a newbie to digital video I purchased this on a recommendation. I want to produce some short (20-30min) instructional videos to be duplicate on VHS tape as well as digital formats(svcd, dvd?). I noticed everyone here seems to use adobe or ulead.

Vegas might actually be a little overkill for you. The cheaper SF Video Factory program might be all you really need. It's all a matter of personal opinion, but I think all the Sonic Foundry stuff is quite good.

no lots of people use vegas. i personally use ulead dvd moviefactory but only for its ease of use and cool menus. i also edit with adobe premiere and i use windows moviemaker alot for simple movie tasks. search the forum youll see lots of vegas video stuff

Vegas doesn't seem to be as popular, but I have tried it and it works quite well. The encoder that is included is very good.
Vegas is probably a better buy for the dollar than Adobe, but certainly Premiere has a much larger user base. -
vegas 3 is simply awesome. But it took me some time to get used to vegas UI. But once over the hump I have not looked back.
