Big problems with Sony 500 DRU

I have no tried 5 different brand of DVD-R disc, and every time I try to burn or check the disc, the PC freeze. The only disc that works is the DVD+RW that was in the package. Do I have to do anything when I shall use DVD-R disc?. I do consider to leave the drive back, and by the new Pioneer A05 instead.

The brand that I have tried: Memorex, MMORE, White Label, Finim tech, and one nameless.

Hope anyone have some advice.

ok those all are crappy media try something like TDK and burn without using Nero cause it sucks for DVD no matter what drive you use. That should help ive burnt TDK's on my DRU500A and they played fine in all ymy players so far.

Can you specifie wich TDK disc you use, and what DVD program you will recommand.

Well i used the the regular TDK DVD-R you can buy in any best Buy or Compusa and such, none of that "OEM" or Whitetop" crap, and depending what you were planning on burning id go dfferent routes witgh software, fo rsay backing up a DVD-5 i would just use DVDDecryptor to make and ISO tehn burn it with the same program, for data and such , i would just use Record Now( or RecordNow Max, once they release the patch).

Try this; go to your hardware device manager, scroll down to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers go wherever you have connected your SONY burner Primary or Secondary click twice, properties windows come up, click on advance settings tab and change from DMA to PIO mode on transfer mode on the appropiate Device.
No need to reboot, now go to Nero and simulate a burn with a DVD-R disc. I don't guarantee those brands would work but at least your PC won't freeze.
Do you have a mobo with VIA chipset?

I have tried all the tips with no luck. But no I have formated my disc and did a clean install of WinXP with all the newest drivers. And gess what? No it works with all the media I have tested before. The only one that I got write error on was the most expensive disc I bought " Memorex".

Now I hope someone can give me a tips where I can buy media without very expensive shippingcost. I live in Norway.

I had the exact same problem... I made a post not knowing you post exact problem... I wasted 5 disc too... and I also only got the DVD+RW to work!!!

MyDVD - wasted 1 Disc
Nero (MOST CURRENT) - 4Disc wasted, 1 disc worked (DVD+RW).

and if anyone can help too... can someone tell me how to make a DVD-VCD with Menus... I tried MyDVD and it reencodes it to SVCD, so I can't fit as much!!!

there is a firmware release for sony dru500a....go and install it...it will fix many media incompability problems

ok guyz... I wasted 6 Disc now...

All 6 = DVD-R with Two Different Brands

2 Success = 1 DVD+RW, 1 DVD+R

is something wrong with DVD-R's for Sony DRU500A???

Upgrade your Sony firmware!!!!!

This will fixed some media incompatiblity. I bought a 25 pack of Princo DVD-R 1X at http://www.allmediaoutlet.com/P-DVDR-4.7-GENPrinco.html

All coasters!!!!!

However, I got Ritek DVD-R 1X at http://www.shop4tech.com/user.htm?go=view_item&id=242&cata=1&s_cata=88

Works like a charm. 5 out 5 DVD movies!!!!

Oh, BTW, i'm using Nero 5.9.9.17 and IfoEdit 0.95 to make IFO and img to burn.
