How long does cdr/w dvdr/w recording last ?

Since everyone is rusing to buy a SO-NY DRU500,
I wouldlike to find out how long does the recording
on CDR/W DVDR/W material went back ?

Some of my Blue CDR only last 4 years or less.

Maybe some one can set up a poll ?

some disks last over 10 years for siure and more so this is going to be a really long poll ... plus dvd-r disks only been not that many years ..

They are most likely doing accellerated aging tests on the stuff so
it's not perfectly accurate... But even if it lasts half of that it's good.

I'm going to re-burn on much cheaper and more stable media in a few years anyway.

You think if I transfer all my pictures to cave paintings they will last longer

I belive normal Cave painting does not retain quality as well as Digital Media. The Cave must be pretty Huge to retain the 5000 Jpeg My wife has.

lets see how good your dvd is going to look 5000 years from now for a fair comparison ...

Although cave paintings last a very long time they do suffer from quality loss caused by a variety of things such as humidity and occasional flooding. Not to mention over zelous archeologist and tourists.
