  1. Its probably down to the movie but is there anyway I can improve a grainy dvd`s visual quality when converting it to svcd with dvd2avi?

Its a PAL dvd so i normally don`t bother with deinterlacing. Will this make a difference or is there any other tools I can use to sharpen the picture during encoding?

  2. crap in=crap out...

if the source sucks, there's really nothing you can do...it's prolly a poorly done DVD...i've seen some of those...(i.e. old non-digitally remastered stuff)

Like poopyhead said the DVD was probably produced from an old print without remastering.

You could try a smoothing filter but that will only blend the pixels and will cause some detail loss.

Did you try the advanced filters in tmpgenc (color correction, sharpen edges etc..)?

To test various combinations just select any 10 minute range of the movie and try multiple tests on the same range so you can compare results.

You can burn them all on 1 svcd and then compare them on your player.

If you don't have the Plus versions then you can only test vcd as output.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.
