    is there a way for me to tell if an mpeg file is either an mpeg1 or mpeg2 file. is there a tool that will convert an mpeg1 file to an mpeg2 or vice versa? thanks.

    Absoltely. TMPGEnc. When you first load it, close the wizard, and select Open new project. Load the video in question. The text along the bottom will tell you what you have. Then all you have to do is install the appropiate template with the Load function to change it to MPEG-1 or -2.
