I was ready old posts about wrappers because I'd like to improve what I have and I'd like to make sure I understand this.
Currently I use Virtualdub with ATI AIW 128 Pro under Windows XP. Now do I understand correctly that as long as I have the ATI card and XP I will have to use a set up with a WDF conversion wrapper such as the set up I have with virtualdub? No matter what software I use I will be stuck with the whole WDF conversion wrapper? This has worked for me but I think the picture could be clearer. Are all wrappers created equal or can I pay money for one that will do a better job?

A bit of clarification:
This is not just about ATI cards. Its about the capture application which was designed to be used with VFW drivers but works with wdm drivers through the use of the wrapper. Virtualdub is not the only app that is based on the old VFW (vxd virtual drivers) (avi-io,freevcr, winvcr, just to name a few).
There are many captures apps that are designed to use directshow filters and wdm drivers directly. PowerVCR II, WINVDR Pro,WINDVR,AMCAP, IuVCR,Virtualvcr, Showshifter etc.....
These and many others do not need a wrapper or vxd drivers because they use the newer architecture more common with the more recent windows OS.
I use Win98SE and can install either type of driver but they cannot co-exist and you can't use a wrapper because non exists. Right now I run WDM drivers on my system with win98se so if I load a capture app and it doesn't find my card then I know that the program was designed for use with vfw drivers. When I used to run with VFW drivers and an app did not see my card then I knew that the app was designed to be used with WDM drivers.
If you are running another OS than win98se then its more confusing because the wrapper makes both types of apps work but in your case some of them work through this wrapper.
With win98se its black and white. The capture card only works with the program if the proper drivers (wdm or vfw) are also installed. There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.
