  1. I have a 500 MHz G3 iBook running Mac OSX 10.2.3 with a Sony DCR-TRV18 DV camcorder. I get my DV footage and do my DV editing in iMovie 2. However, I'm finding the G3 processor to be VERY slow in doing SVCD conversions (using ffmpegX) -- as much as 30-45 minutes per minute of video.

What I'm looking to do is use TMPGEnc to convert the DV files to SVCD on my P3 450 MHz Win2K PC. However, I am running into problems finding a codec to work on my PC. After reading through the forums, I've found that there are type 1 DV and type 2 DV files -- but I haven't found thru searching a codec that will work. I've downloaded both the Canopus DV codec and the Panasonic DV codec from the Tools page as well, and neither of them work (I can see both codecs under VirtualDub's formats menu however).

Is there any software i can download that will let TMPGEnc read the files? I am trying both raw captured DV clips from iMovie, and a finished DV format movie from iMovie as well.

    Thanks in advance,
    Josh

If it seems the DV-avi isn't recognized as being a valid avi-stream at your windows-platform, then all you must do is to install a software-codec of your Mac-DV at the windows-system.
When you've done so, TMPGenc will work just fine.

I've had the same problem, though I only have win32 systems.
I captured movie at a system with the 'Matrox RT-2500', which uses its own DV-codec (hardware). To be able to use the avi-stream at another system (which, of course, didn't have the 'Matrox' card installed), all I had to do was installing a software codec of the DV-codec of Matrox.

Contact the supplier of your DV-system for a software codec to be used at a win32-platform.

  3. Some programs have trouble with type 1 DV files. You can try to capture in type 2 DV avi. DVIO in the tools section allows you to capture in type 2 or type 1 DV avi.

However, I manage to get TMPGenc to recognize type 1 files. I believe that it is by setting the priority setting in TMPGEnc for directshow at a higher setting, for example, +4, you increase the chances of compatibility with type 1 DV files. The exact instructions to do this are the following:

    In TMPGEnc, select:
Option >Environmental setting > VFAPI plug-in > Right click the "DirectShow Multi Media File Reader" > select higher priority, do this several times until its at the top with a value of 4.
