I have a problem. I have a DVD that's NTSC which I need to convert to PAL SVCD to be compatible with my television.

When I encoded it, I used the SVCD standard at a CBR of 2520 using TMPGenc. I used "inverse telecine" and "do not convert frame rate". I also chose to encode it in interlace mode.

The finished product plays absolutely fine on my computer but when I put it in the DVD player, I get horrible lines that look like interlace problems that I've seen before only many times more pronounced.

I figured that maybe I could get round this by converting the raw .VOB files from the DVD to very high quality DivX and then subsequently to SVCD. This also failed - giving exactly the same problem as before.

Finally, I thought I would try encoding it in MPEG-2 with a progressive format rather than interlaced. VCDeasy now tells me the file is not compatible. Is it possible to make an SVCD in progressive mode rather than interlaced? If so, what is my problem here?

I should also say that I have tried encoding to xVCD MPEG-1 at SVCD resolution and bitrate. Unfortunately TMPGenc squashes the picture to half the letterbox size it should be. The only workaround is to encode an xVCD MPEG-1 at VCD resolution with SVCD bitrate. Obviously this compromises the quality however owing to the reduced number of horizontal lines.

Sorry this is all so convoluted but help with any of the problems here would be much appreciated. All I want to do is make a PAL SVCD!
