I just reinstalled WinXP, and I forgot how to modify explorer, so that rather than expanding the directory tree when I click on a directory name, it just shows the directory contents.
Not sure if that makes sense, but lets say i'm exploring my primary drive and I click on the "Widnows" dir, in XP (by default) the left explorer pane, will expand the directory to show all the directories in Windows.
It does this:
- Windows
Command
Inf
System
Temp
I want it to do this:
+ Windows
Any help would be Greatly appreciated. It is really annoying having to keep closing the directories, when all I want to do is take a quick look at the root.

On the left hand side there is plus sign. If you click on plus sign the directories will be expanded. If you click on the name (say, on C
in the right pane you'll get what is in root and dirs won't be expanded.
So, click on name not on plus sign. -
Just to clarify, the folder expansion thingy happens when I click on the directory name. As soon as I click on the name (e.g., "windows") , the whole directory is expanded

OK, here's the solution.
1) open Windows Explorer
2) go to Tools and then Folder options
3) chose tab View and under Files and Folder make sure that "Display simple folder view in Explorer's Folders list" in UNCHECKED.
4) click OK
I think that's what you want.
