  1. Wutz Up? Ok im wondering if all of these vcds we r making now can be put on a dvd-r disc when we switch over to dvd burners? Which will probably be sooner then we all think... Is it possible to put like 3 or 4 vcd's on one dvd-r or does it have to be in mpeg-2 format? Like the old vhs tapes where u can put 3 movies on with no problem just real shitty quality... Im wondering this cuz i dont wanna make vcd's that have to be put on 2 disc...I mean c'mon im lazy...im not gonna get up and switch to part 2 or 3...Im sure we can encode it to mpeg2 for dvd but why u wont have the quality of dvd after it has been in vcd mpeg1...right? Someone let me know if this is possible...i am very curious and cant wait to get a dvd burner....The disc prices have to come down alot...i cant wait till i see them on a spool...any help would be great...peace

I would assume that a DVD player would be compatible with a really big VCD but I don't know. That would be really great since you could basically shove ... 535 minutes. 8 hours and 55 minutes on a 4.7gig DVD+R... and that's on one side. So basically if you had a big collection of VCDs, XVCDs and SVCDs you could just minimize your storage space by ripping them all and burning them on a DVD+R.

Of course this is assumption. Can anyone verify this? Might just end up depending on player compatibility.

  3. due to technical reasons, you won't be able to write a DVD-r in VCD or SVCD format, because (incomplete list of reasons)
    • most players will be confused, just the way they are for CD-R written in DVD format (see mini-DVD issues)
    • the (S)VCD format has some limiting addressing problems, which don't support media's larger than the size of 99min CD-R's very well without breaking the specs...
    • (S)VCDs requires green book aka CDROM-XA features, of which I'm not sure they are supported for DVD's as well...
    • various other reasons

When you say they won't be compliant (SVCD's and VCD's on a DVD-R) does that apply equally well for DVD+R? Or is it too soon to tell?

By the way - this news would be devastating for me as I was looking forward to viewing over 4 hours of SVCD quality clips on 1 disk.

  5. That would be great if its possible wouldnt it chopper...hey hvr so what if it was mpeg2 and then burned then would it work...All im wondering is will all this vcd shit go to waste...Im sure u could encode it with tmpgenc and encode it to mpeg2 format...But will all dvd players play dvd-r...Im sure diffrent things will come along since dvd burning is so new and expensive...who knows what we will see...My question is if we can encode it to mpeg 2 and burn it to a dvd-r then will it play on a home dvd player?? since hvr said that it would be impossible to make a very big vcd because of a number of reasons...I also noticed at bestbuy that there was a dvd burner for the home which when u recorded on it u could put it in diffrent recording speeds just like vhs...The dvd-ram could be a 2,4, or 6 hour long disc...cool huh...thanx for the info chopper and hvr...u r appreciated...but if someone could answer my other ? that would be great...thanx and any help will be appreciated....peace

  6. I don't have the DVD(-RW) Video spec yet, but you may be able to write just DVD's as DVD with low bitrates...
(e.g. using the bitrates and resolution used for XSVCDs)

this way you may be able to get 4/6/8 hour playing movies on a 4gig DVD...

Gee that's too bad. Could've been pretty cool. But still you can also just jam all the VCDs on a DVD+R and play them on you computer. It's just not the same though.

  9. lighten up people, a friend of mine has the Pioneer DVD burner and yes you can put VCD and SVCD movies on a DVDR and they play fine. The burner burns either MPEG1 (VCD)or MPEG2 (SVCD) files. He puts several movies on one disk

  11. Yeah, I've heard you can put vcd or svcd on dvd-r's. The problem with the vcd's not being able to be on 99 minute cd-r's was that standalones would only read up to 90 minute cd-r's. It wasn't the vcd or svcd. I'm looking forward to having 4 or 5 svcd's on 1 dvd-r!

  12. ...well, what do you actually mean, when you say "putting svcd's on DVDR's"?

is it putting only the MPEG stream in (S)VCD format on a DVDR (which's easy)? or is it actually mastering the DVDR as larger (S)VCD?

    the latter one surely lead to some problems;
e.g. PBC with entry points, those track beginnings and entry points are defined by BCD msf structures, which allow only for addressing from
    00:00.00 (LSN = 0) to 99:59.74 (LSN = 450000 - 1), thus you can't
have any entry point (and thus track start as well, since that's mandatory entry point) after the 450000th sector...

similiar problems exist for SVCDs, where the scan offsets are defined in bcd msf notation, thus limiting a track to a maximum size of 450000 sectors

but well, you wouldn't be able to have a track larger than 512000 sectors anyway, since because then you'd have problems with ISO9660 limitations..

btw, and this problems applies to those 120min CDR's as well... and since the industry is surely more interested in the DVD technology, they don't care for the (S)VCD spec to be extended to support larger medias... IMHO
