  1. I am fairly New to Video CD making but I have made some before but I have came across this dead end. I have Star Wars Attack of the Clones and its in 3 parts each part around 800 mb. They are in .MPG form and I have tried to conver them to .avi so I can make them into a Video CD but I have had no success. I do not know if the .MPG is a MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 or 4 or what but it doesnt seem to want to convert or something. If there is a converter out there from .MPG --> .avi then please post me a link and tell me what to do quick because I'm stuck. I would appreciate any help thanks.

To make a VCD, you have to convert your .mpg file to an MPEG-1 format. I suggest you use TMPGEnc to do the conversion. However, if you insist on making them AVIs and they are MPEG-1s, use Virtual Dub or TMPGEnc. If they are MPEG-2s, use TMPGEnc Plus.

Someone has probably already made them as videocd. No need to convert, why not just burn 1 to videocd using Nero and see how it plays.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

Just because it is an MPEG file does not mean it will make a good VCD. You know as well as I do that is why we have templates. Please do not coax him into expanding his coaster collection.

    Tommyknocker:

A slight difference of opinion but after the fact.

My comments were written without my ever seeing yours and were a response to a newbie request but I maintain my position.

Someone obviously went through the trouble of making a 3 disk mpeg. I can't vouch for the quality of the original but can assure you that reencoding will never improve the quality of the output. You can mask detail using filters or correct some framerate issues but that will not improve the basic image. The templates only come into play if there is a need to reprocess the video. That has not been established in any manner.
My suggestion to this user does not require he make any coasters since I am sure he can use a cdrw for any tests. I should have suggested that he use cdrw in my answer.

My first suggestion is still to burn 1 cd (not all 3) and see what he has. It will save a lot of unecessary reprocessing if he likes the results.

Since it is 3 disks it is possible that its an mpeg2 and I believe that he should find out in case it needs to be burned as an svcd but that is all that I would add that is different.

I respectfully state that reprocessing would be overkill as a first step.

I say load the video into TMPGEnc. If it is VCD formatted then proceed. If it is not, why burn a coaster?

I am pretty sure that I have a copy of the 3 avi files from which someone made your mpeg files.

The original avi were encoded in mpeg4 v3 and the audio was mp3 that is why I know that your files are already in VCD or SVCD format. What I do not know is what country they were made in (Pal or NTSC standard) or what country you are in and therefore what kind of DVD player you have. It is important that you know this whether you choose to reprocess or not. Filling in your profile would help because it helps us to make more educated suggestions if we know these things including your operating system, hardware etc....

  9. Thank you for all responding, but when I try to load it into TMP whatever that program is it says that it cannot be opened or when I try to load it. When I try to make a video Cd on Nero it will put the file on the CD but it says the file needs to be enocded, therefore purchase Nero blah blah so Im like screw that. So I dont know why it wont accept the files. THe quality of the video is really nice it almost looks like a clean DVD rip. I dont believe the quality will deminish that much. I just want to put the damn stuff on VCD's so I can play them on my DVD player. But nothing is working. Maybe someone out there has the same files as me and can help me!

  10. Also That each file is about 830mb .mpg for Attack of the Clones and there are 3 parts so I dont see how any of them would fit on a disk anyways. SOMEONE HELP!!! ahhh

  11. an Update Im going to post a screen on what Nero is telling me.

Well I cant get my screen to work so I'll type what it says.

The File Star Wars Episode 2 - Disc 1.MPG is not a valid file for creating a standard Video CD V 2.0 (CD-I player) disc. A compliant video file requires the following specifications:
MPEG-1 which was encoded for Video-CD:
    audio: 44.1 kHz; stereo; 224 Kbit/s
    video: 352x240 / 29.97 Hz or 352x420 / 23.976 Hz or 352x288 / 25 Hz

    The following Problems were Found:
    - MPEG-2 instead of MPEG-1
    - Invalid video stream: 29.97 frames/second, 480x 480 pixels

When you burn it with Nero choose super video CD instead of video cd.

It was encoded as an svcd. Now I hope your standalone player supports svcd.

  13. Hey Man that SVCD worked and it plays in my Panasonic stand alone DVD player but the video is slightly choppy along with the sound. How do I fix that? When I play it on my Computer DVD player it plays find but the sound is a bit scratchy. How would I fix this?

The choppiness is a little more difficult because it could be the bitrate issue or maybe the original mpeg2 that needs to be demultiplexed and remultiplexed or it could even be your media.

Some players just don't play svcd very well so its hard to tell.

There are no guarantees even if you went through a full reprocess that you would not end up with the same problem.

Is it that bad for a free movie? If you do anything then do the demux/ remux first since its a fast process.

The scratchy sound on your computer is probably on the original audio track and probably cannot be removed without some complicated processing. There are tools designed to remove audio scratching from old 45 rpm records. Easycd Creator has an audio tool to do that but it means demuxing the audio, converting it to wav, using the scratch reducer and then recreating the mpeg2 audio and then remuxing. A lengthy process.

I'm pretty sure this is the same three disk version that I have.

It's actually a DVD rip, and it's your player that mucks up SVCD if it's not good quality shit. The sound is a bit sparkling in one part of the movie for some reason, but not on the two other disks.

If you want to make it a VCD instead, be my guest. Load in TMPGenc, choose VCD (PAL or NTSC, you decide) and go for it.
BUT: The quality of the picture will get bad at big screen (projector).

You can try this for determining if it's the player or the source that have faults in picture.

I tried to De-Multiplext it and then re-multiplex it then it says in Nero it has some wrong stuff with it so it wont play in a DVD player or whatever. So I dont know what to do. I mean the crackling and skipping frames is very annoying because the quality is so great I just want it to run smoothly. I mean the MPEG runs smooth and when I burn a Video CD it runs smooth on my computer just not in the stand alone DVD player. Perhaps I am de-multiplexing and multiplexing it wrong. Hey gll99
