  1. I'm going insane! I don't know much about video, but I've been trying to burn some MPEG2 or svcd's into vcd using MacOs 9.2. I know MacOs X is able to do it, but I just haven't found any software that allows me to see my svcd's on my IMac or on my dvd player. Whenever I use this MPEG-2 encoder, the program just tells me the file is unrecognizable or something like that and then it immediately crashes. The same thing happens when I try to demux the file. Is there any solution to this? HELP!

Astarte MPack would do the trick in OS 9.1 or 9.2. But they were bought by apple and are now part of DVD Studio Pro which runs on X. If I were you I would just go spend the $100 and upgrade to X. It is worth it for so many reasons.

  3. You are not real clear, do you want to burn vcd / svcd in OS9, or play them? Start by reading this post http://www.macdvd.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000029.html

  4. OK, I have some svcd's which I want to burn on my iMac so I can see them on my tv/ Panasonic dvd player, which can play vcd's. I have been able to convert .avi files intod vcd's and copy other vcd's I have and see them on the dvd, but whenever I try to convert/burn the svcd's I can't. I've tried with QT 6 Pro, Toast Titanium, VCD Gear, etc., but no luck so far.

  5. To clarify a bit more, whenever I try to play those svcd's (which were made on a PC using NERO), the image and sound are VERY SLOW. When I use MPack, Toast, VCD Gear or QT to convert them into a vcd I get a message that says that the file is not an mpeg file. If I copy the svcd and play it on the dvd, it doesn't recognize it. I really don't want to upgrade to OSX (yeah, I want it the easy way), but I refuse to believe that Mac isn't able to do that type of conversion.

  6. Ok, you have some SVCD disk. You can't play the disk, because the is no player in OS 9 or OS X. But in OS 9, you can go in a play the mpeg track if you have purchased the mpeg2 component for QuickTime 6. I don't know why it would play very slow.

Now, how to copy. Some of the apps you mentioned are looking for mpeg1, and you said you've made VCD before. SVCD uses mpeg2, I think Cleaner may be the only OS 9 app that can transcode mpeg2 to mpeg1. However, MacMpeg2Decoder and MacMpeg2Converter may run on OS 9. Then you could decode to QuickTime and save as Toast Ready VCD mpeg1, or drop it into M.Pack. Again, I don't think there is a way author the SVCD file structure in OS 9. So VCD is your only option.

Before doing all that you may see if Astarte CD-Copy does any better at direct copying the SVCD disk. Also, have you tried imaging the disk first?
