  1. I noticed kazaa has some nice divx files, but most of them are over 700mb. I can't overburn that much.

Is there an easy way to split the divx files or compress them more?

    thx in advance.

  2. compressing the file more would loose quality and I recommend against it.

your easiest solution is to split the divx file. Virtualdub or avisplit (both linked from here) can do it. There is also a howto under the FAQ section.

  3. How much quality loss? I'm talking like 712mb to under 700. I like to keep my movies on 1 disk. If not I guess splitting is the best possible way.

An 80 min CDR will hold 814,080KB or 795MB PLUS the 12MB overhead of VCDeasy or 807mb total without overburn.

It is easy to make a 700-750mb DivX AVI fit into that size. Please see http://www.kvcd.net for more details.

Generally I found that about 80-90 minutes can fit on the 80min CDR and look real good. As you get closer to 120 minutes in the AVI it gets harder and the final quality depends on the AVI quality.

    Good Luck!

  5. DOH! That's what i though, but nero and roxio have been giving me errors lately saying that the mediun had insufficient space :/

I just figured I could only overburn svcds and stuff. I knew I had overburned a divx file before.

What I am saying is that if you are trying to keep to 1, 700mb disk and you are concerned about quality you are losing 100mb and much higher quality (80min disks ~$15 for 50 at office depot) by not fully utilizing the CDR capcity.

If you are getting an error that the file will not fit then you NEED to check to make sure you are burning in MODE 2.

    Good luck

I get the impression that reman is talking about converting the AVI to VCD, whereas #1Newbie wants to store the AVI as is on a CD?!?
These are 2 completely different approaches. When making a VCD, the size of the AVI doesn't matter a bit, as only the length of the movie and the bitrate you use when encoding the AVI to MPEG matters. Expect around 80 min movie on a VCD standard 80 min CD.
If you want to burn the AVI to a CD, then the nominal capacity of the CD is what counts - a 700 MB CD-R will take (you guessed it) 700 MB of AVI file (not taking overburning into account, which would allow a few extra megs).

  8. ya, im talking about storing avis on disks. I have an Ultimate 2000 video device that allows me to run video to my tv. No quality loss, so i dont need to convert to vcd inorder to play my movies on my tv

Thats why i can use divx files.

Does anyone know if there are compatability issues with this media? Will a burner support it out of the box, simply seeing more available space, or is this something I would probably need to flash the CD-RW for?

    Good question!

The link (www.cd4sale.com) produced a price page that is silly! They want $27.99 for a 50 pack of 80min. Office Depot and Staples sell them for $15. Try searching GOOGLE.

    Good Luck

DJRumpy was asking about info on 90 min media...this link takes you to that sites' page.
Who cares about the price for the 80 min media!!......he's not interested in them (and neither are we...for that matter)

What I do when I make a divx file from a dvd, I cut that lady out of the beginning where she is holding up a torch and it says sony pictures or whatever they have. I also cut out all the credits at the end. This way I can use a higher bitrate for the movie because it is now shorter. If you are having problems with it saying that the disk is not big enough, just edit out the credits and it will make your file size smaller so it will fit. That is if you don't mind the movie not having any credits, I don't.

    thats actually a good suggestion.
One that I use all the time.
Some opening and ending credits can be as much as 10 to 15 mins in total.
(one of the Superman movies had credits that ran for 18 minutes at the end!)

I did a bit of research on the higher media types for CD-R. Apparently they will not work in quite a few of the CD-Roms. Some would burn properly, but you couldn't access the files after you burned them. Various problems like that.

You could always buy a DVD-R or DVD+R. Then you could throw about 6 of those movies onto a DVD.
