  1. Have I just gotten lucky with this up until now? I wouldn't consider myself to really be a newbie, I have encoded 100+ dvd rips now. I'm curious as to all the postings I see regarding problems with TMPGEnc.

If I am doing a straight format conversion such as avi to mpeg, I almost always stick with TMPGEnc. I have even had exceptional results doing the "toughie" conversion of .mov or .wmv to mpeg1 with TMPGEnc.
All I've ever done is load the file to be converted and set my output parameters......then start. The mpeg1 VCD encoding I have done is always very good with TMPGEnc and I think fairly quick as well.

As far as svcd goes, I think that CCE does a better job with mpeg2.......but I don't have that kind of patience!! To do 100 mins of video to svcd using CCE usually takes me 12+ hours. However, the quality of VBR 4 pass is REMARKABLE when I do take the time to use CCE and encode at 480x480 svcd. In most cases, nearly identical in picture and sound quality to a DVD. You should see Star Wars Episode2!!!!! WOW!!! Best svcd I've ever made for sure!!

I suppose my final conclusion is to not get trapped with only one method you are comfortable with. Different circumstance calls for, sometimes. a different approach. Can everyone who reads this leave a post about your favorite piece of encoding software? I'm just trying to round myself o0ut a little more and other opinions are the only way to learn!!
