I've re-designed my webpage, showing the method I use to backup films onto two DVD-R discs. It now includes some rather lovely screen captures taken during the copying process! Take a look:-

had a look at your website, will try your method tommorow. Just got the hang of backing up my dvd's to 2 dvdr's. My question is does your method work with dvd's that have more than one title set, a la miss congeniality
-
My method is for copying the film only (no extras), so as long as the film uses just one title set there'll be no problems.
-
Why not just separate the vob's into two directories and use Ifoedit to create ifo's for the two directories.

Hi Brian
I've been following your original procedure (without the pictures) and it works great.
I noticed in this updated page in step 18 that you now have "create new VIDEO_TS.IFO & VTS_01_0.IFO" checked.
I'm not doing that in your original procedure and everything's working OK. Is this really necessary, because you just created the new .ifo's.
Also, step 21 (you have two step 21's) says to save both .ifo files. I believe that this is not necessary also. When you press "Get VTS Sectors", the window that appears says that the .ifo's will automatically be saved.

Hi Brian,
I have used your procedure to burn a movie to 2 DVD-Rs, but when I play the disks in my standalone player (I have tried 3), I get freezing and pixelation all during Chapter 1 on both disks. At first I thought it was bad DVD-Rs, but the freezing seems to be only during Chapter 1. After I get past chapter 1 on both disks, they play fine. I am using a DVD-RAM Matshita LF D-311 to burn the DVD-Rs. I am using Windows XP on a P4 2.2 GHz, with 1 GB of RAM, I have version 2.41 of SmartRipper and version 5.5.9.9 of Nero. Can you think of something I can try to get rid of the freezing in Chapter 1? They play okay with the DVD player in IFOEdit, i.e., no freezing. Thanks for any help you can give. -
I have no idea why that problem is occuring, all the ones I've burnt have not done that. Seems strange it's only happening on chapter 1. I'm also using Nero 5599, P4 2GHz, 1GB of RAM. I've had a few burning probs that was caused by bad media.

This is a very relaxing and good Method!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only disadvantage that i can see is that the subtitles ARE BADD GREEN AND UGLY!!!
You see i'm from greece and subs for me are very important!!!!!
If i could find the solution to the green ugly subs i would be so happy. -
I wish I could figure out the subtitles too! Anyone here know how to solve this?

Brian,
Back to my problem above about the freezing in Chapter 1, I've found other places where the freezing occurs, so it doesn't seem to be isolated to chapter 1. It does occur all the way through Chapter 1, however, and then doesn't occur again till much later in the movie. I have also tried TDK DVD-Rs (my first try was with Memorex), and I still get the freezing. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. I wonder if it has anything to do with Nero maybe not being fully compatible with the Matshita DVD-RAM LF-D311 drive I am using. Thanks again for any help you may offer. -
Brian,
I think I've figured out what the problem is, after burning a few coasters. I tried 2 different media (Memorex and TDK) and 2 different burning programs (Nero and RecordNowMax), with the same results: freezing during a large part of Chapter 1. It looks like the movie has 2 angles, and I chose to rip angle 1. Right where the user has a choice of angle 1 or 2 in the original movie, is where the freezing problem starts when playing the burned DVD-R in my standalone player. Then it continues all the way through the rest of chapter 1, I believe because that entire scene has 2 angles in the original movie. Probably some of the pointers in the IFO file are still there for angle 2, but I only ripped angle 1, so the standalone DVD player gets confused, even though the scene plays fine in the IFOEdit DVD player from the hard drive. Is there a way to get rid of angle 2 entirely, either with SmartRipper or IFOEdit? That would probably be the next thing for me to try. Any help is appreciated. -
I tried this method out and it works perfectly ...
Is there a way to maintain 16:9 aspect ratio or does it always create a 4:3 display? -
---PLEASE IF ANYBODY FIND A SOLUTION ABOUT THE SUBTITLES--- E-MAIL ME AT greekblue@hotmail.com
I can copy ANY movie (with ifoedit) in one or two (depends on the movie) dvd-r (only the movie) with chapters, all audio streams and everything EXCEPT THE SUBTITLES. They appear green and ugly. If anybody has an easy solution please INFORM ME.
I just rip the vob's, create ifo with ifo edit and that's it!!!!
Thanx -
Re: Picture 13: For some reason I can't upload to the ftp server. Been trying for days now! As soon as it lets me upload, I'll put the picture back. I'll gladly email the pic to you, as it's the one that shows the correct settings in Vob Extras. Apologies for the problem.
-
Fixed it! Sorry about that, I forgot about my firewall, it prevented any uploading! Pic13 is now back in place.

Hey, thanks for the tutorial.
I have encountered one problem though, hopefully you can help me out.
I followed step by step, all good, burn it, fine, go to play it... disc error.
everytime I alter any DVD (strip, split, anything other than 1-1 copy) it never works. my player plays burnt dvds, just never had any luck with altered ones. can you suggest anything? I have to be missing something.
thanks -
ok, an update ....
my player wont play it, but another one will.
why will my player player dvd-5 to 5 copies but not dvd-9 to 5 copies??
is there anything I can alter? -
Hi Brian,
I wanted to let you know I've solved the problem from my earlier postings about when a movie has angles. Your method does work great, and thanks so much for posting your how-to manual!
However, here's how to change your document to let people know what to do when a movie has more than one angle:
In step 18, after pressing the 'VOB Extras' button, if the movie has angles, under 'VOB file options', check the box that says 'Remove IIvu/Angle point.' Otherwise, the movie will freeze many times during the multiple angle sections.
Hope this helps, and thanks again for the document! -
Sorry!
My post just above about using your method to split a movie with angles doesn't work. I was basing my response on burning the 2 sections of the movie to DVD-RAMs, then running the movie with WinDVD on my PC. Both DVD-RAMs worked fine with WinDVD. However, when I burned the first part to DVD-R and played it on my standalone player (Toshiba SD-3750), it didn't play the part of the movie that had angles. Instead, it skipped over that part of the movie and then froze. That same DVD-R played fine on my PC with WinDVD.
When I originally ripped the movie with SmartRipper, I first ripped the first 25 chapters, using your instructions. Chapter 1 showed Program Chain 1 | Angle 1 highlighted, so I assumed it was ripping angle 1. I followed the rest of your instructions, except I made the change I posted above about removing the angle pointers. As I said that worked fine with WinDVD on my PC, but not on my Toshiba. Anybody know how to split a movie using this method, if the movie has angles? -
OK. I realize I have had some conflicting postings above, but I have finally solved the problem with the angles, and the burned DVD-R works in both WinDVD on the PC, AND on my standalone DVD player (Toshiba). I solved the problem by using DVD Decryptor instead of SmartRipper to rip the movie. If you use IFO mode in DVD Decryptor, you will get the chapters laid out similar to what you get in Movie mode in SmartRipper. You can basically use Brian's method, except with DVD Decryptor for the ripping. You can check the Chapters you want and uncheck the ones you don't, etc., just like Brian's original method. For some reason, DVD Decryptor ripped the movie with angles differently, but I used the same IFOEdit steps as the original document, and the movie played fine.
You may want to try DVD Decryptor instead of SmartRipper on a movie with subtitles, and see if that takes care of the ugly green subtitle problem. I have not tried that, since I don't like movies with subtitles anyway.Hope this helps.

thank you dvdjunkie for your reply!!!! I solved the problem with the subs. I rip the movie with dvd decryptor....i keep only the vob and the original ifo. Then i open ifoedit - vob extras - correct ifo tables - create new ifo's and then replace the original ifo with the new one AND READY!!!!!! RIPPED AND SUBS. (that goes for the 2 dvdr version too).

sorry for my poor english -
and an update......I ripped "the snatch" (fits in 1 dvd-r) and i get the pixels and freeze at 1st chapter !!!!! I ripped it with dvd decrypter!!!!!
Grrrrr i want to find the solution to the freezing problem!!!!
