  1. I'm getting ready to buy a DVD player and have been reading lots of information on them at this great site. I've looked at people's recommendations here but I have yet to find one player that stands out. I'm looking for a DVD player that can play most movie formats and MP3 and can be made macrovision free. A 5 disc changer would be nice but isn't a must.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I guess it all depends on your wallet, or checkbook, or (purse)

Well, could you give me some price recommendations at different price points then? I've been using the DVD Player search feature here, but I'm having a hard time seeing differences between different players. Unfortunately important features (like reliability, whether or not Macrovision can be turned off, picture quality, etc.) are not a part of the samles.

I'm willing to spend up to $400 if necessary for a good player. I don't have HDTV so I don't think I need/want progressive scan. I do want to be able to play a lot of video formats easily and MP3's and be able to turn Macrovision off.

    Thanks for your help...

  4. sbradfor,

if you are willing to dig deep, get yourself two DVD players.
Say a Pioneer or Sony for best DVD / sound and a cheap
Asian player for all the rest - like a Daewoo, Conia or
    older model Apex.

  5. I would suggest the same thing, buy a good player and a cheap one for VCD, SVCD and region free. The best picture quality out right now is probably the Panasonic or Toshiba's. The Panasonic RP82 or RP62 has the Sage/Faroudja chip which is the best MPEG decoder out there right now. These players run around $169.00 for the 62 to $210 for the 82.

  6. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. So it sounds like there are two things, good picture quality versus lots of features and no one has both eh?

    That's too bad. Thanks again.

Thanks. Any info on which Daewoo or Conia?

    Appreciate the advice.

I have been very happy with my JVC XA-FA900BK 7 disk changer. It's progressive and it's got SVCD 100% compatibility. It appears that the image and compatibilty are right up there with my ( sill in use ) pioneer DV-333.

I don't know how to turn off macrovision, but that's not a big concern for me.

Thanks for the info Snowmoon. I'll look into this one. I'd like to get a disc changer if I can find one with the right features. This may be the ticket. Does it play MP3's?

Yes, although their is a rumor that it has problems with id3v2 tags on mp3's. I havn't gotten a chance to check it out yet.

Oh... one more thing. It's compatibility is approx the same as the 500BK so check out the DVD players page for JVC and you can see it will play all of the DVD+-RW formats.
