I just purchased a Sony video cam with pass through A-V conversion.
I used Adobe Premier to capture a show from my satellite receiver, and the resulting AVI is 17GB for a 1 hour show.
How can I get a smaller file and still keep decent quality? Do I have to adjust my capture settings?... or can I convert my 17GB file to something smaller??
Thanks

DV is fixed at about 13GB per hour. Other capturing methods such as using Huffyuv (analog capture) can take up to about 35GB/hour. Usually, if you can spare the space, you want to capture in as high of quality as possible (meaning larger files) then convert to the final format. Capturing in the final format (such as mpeg) can often lead to very poor quality captures.
there are many guides around here for converting DV to avi or mpeg, so search the forums and the encoding guides. -
capturing to DV should be fine. it's a good, lossless codec. and you'll be encoding to VCD/SVCD/DVD anyway so you can delete your original 17 GB file afterwards.. i don't see a problem (as long as you have lots of hard drive space!)

Thanks geek rock,
Can I use Adobe Premier to convert the DV to VCD/DIVX/etc??
Or do I need different software?
If I need different... what do you recommend?
Thanks -
do all your editing, cutting, etc. in premier and save the file.
you should then be able to convert the resulting file with tmpgenc.
what are you planning to do with the captures? VCD?

Some stuff I would like to make VCD/SVCD
Other stuff DivX
Other stuff .mpg or .avi for emailing
After I edit, what type of file do I save it as?
I can do all this with tmpgenc?
Thanks a bunch! -
Personally I am using TMPGenc to convert to VCD/SVCD/CVD and VirtualDub to convert to anything else.
