i see that you are still searching for the "best" divx program.
i personally think gknot is the best and easiest. there are guides all over the internet for this program. the most important things i do for great quality are the following--

1-always use 2 pass divx 5.02 pro encoding(yes do it before you go to sleep and it will be done when you wake)

2-when caculating avi size, at least 10 megabytes for every minute of combined video and audio(i use 190 kilobits/sec audio and 1200 kilobits/sec video)

    3-640 x 352 resolution output

    4-phychovisual enhancements at normal

5-use pro features with all options checked

other resolution settings depend on source dvd

i know many will disagree with me but i don't care. i dont put divx on cd's so size is not important to me at all. this is just advice and use the guides to help you with the rest.

But aren't you interested to know why we may disagree? As someone who always uses Gordian Knot for all my encoding, I find that I don't need to guess at a bitrate. GK consistently gives me my target filesize (DivX) to within a few MB. Also, to use GK and not make use of the cropping/resizing option is to miss out on a great feature. (I assume this because you you suggest using 640 x 352 output resolution.) GK will give you a choice of combinations, but 640 horizontal will not always go with 352 vertical after cropping. GK also is very good at maintaining pretty near perfect aspect ratio.

And although the pro features are very good, there is no point in using the Quarter pixel setting unless using very small resolutions.

There is never the best, each to his/her own...

But you may find something that you like better than someone else.

How about DvdX V2 ?, optimized for the Pentium 4, you can load each VOB or load the Ifo, then select AVI as the output, set the codec's to what ever you want.

Using the Ifo, it will make one large AVI, use DivX 3.11 alpha (Low motion) for video, and MP3 for audio for excellent results.

Specify what screen size you want, and view it all before you convert, search Kazaa for "DvdX"
