After I have encoded an MPG from a suitable AVI the file is ok up until a certain point and then the picture goes back with no sound.
The encoding completes normally with TMPGEncm (Reports no errors).
This has happened several times.
All the settings are fine (worked before!)
Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong?

I had this a few times. I never actually discovered what it was, but loading the avi into VirtualDub, choosing Direct Stream Copy for both Audio and Video, and saving the AVI as something else, then re-encoding the new AVI with TMPGenc got around the problem. You should be able to see whether it is working by using the preview window in TMPGEnc.
