Hi, I want to simply take an .avi (DivX) file and burn it directly to a DVD with a DVD burner. How would I do this to ensure best quality (video/sound) regardless of how much space will be taken up, because a DVD will not fill up so it doesn't make a difference. What are the best input variables (bitrate, etc.) that I should keep in mind? Thanks.

You will need to use TMPGEnc or CCE to re-encode the avi into an mpeg2 stream. The quality won't be great as you will occur (at least) a 2nd generation loss of quality. Here is a basic tutorial using TMPGEnc from this site (under the How To...Convert section on the site menu bar to the left).
