Philips DVD 723 - please help!

Sorry that I post this topic again - but 60 views and not a single reply?!?
I need help with my Philips DVD 723:
I bought this player about a month ago in Germany and paid 229 Euros (~$200) for it. The design is cool and VCDs/SVCDs work - but without fast forward+backward function.
I tried JPEG pictures and the player just puked the CD out! Does anyone know how a JPEG-CD must be burned so that the DVD 723 is okay with it?
I also tried the DVDs "The Gift" (pretty scary) and "The Wonder Boys" (pretty boring) on it. Chosing 'English' as language on the region-code-europe DVDs, automatically the german subtitles were shown on the screen. Is there an option which turns off this feature?!
As I bought the player in Europe it's programmed on european DVDs - no US ones work on it! Is there a remote control or any region code hack for the Philips DVD 723?!?
