  1. Hello folks,
I am compelete novice to this scene. So, I am in a need for advice/help/info. I'd like to capture video/audio signal from
sat receiver(S-video and composite outs) or VHS tapes (VCR has no S-video out).
I know, there going to be a lot of "read, read, read" coming. And I am intended to do just that. I just need to get started somewhere.

How much space do I need on HD to capture 1.5-2 hrs movie?
What is the standard resolution for VCD?
What is the standard resolution for SVCD?
How much space will 1.5-2hrs movie take after burnig it to CD?
How long (approx., of course) does it take to make 1 VCD/SVCD?
What Encoding soft to use: recomendations?
Would be using Nero to be sufficient for burnig VCD/SVCD?
    Optimal burnig speed? (2x/4x/6x/....)
Getting video capturing device: any recs/advices?

    My system info:
    Windows XP,
    AMD 1.4GHz
    GeoForce2 GTS Pro (64Mb DDR)
    256 Mb PC2100
    HD WD40Gb (w/ 3 equals partitions - #2(NFS) & #3(FAT32) are practicaly free)

I would highly appreciate any help.
    Sincerely,
    tik-tak

P.S. I am doing this just for fun and getting to know something new.
P.S.S Anyone has ReplayTV? how does extraction from RTV simplifies/complicates the process? ( I do not have RTV, yet, but I am getting it in a few weeks...)

Okay I dont know about your satellite question but I can help with the rest. 1 hours of VCD is roughly 600MB. 10MB a minute. As for encoding, I use TMPGEncoder. The old free version is on this site I think. Nero is THE BEST burning software I have seen for VCDs, I use it. As for time involved, well mine it take 2.5-3X the run length. I have a500MHz celeron so your machine will do alot better. Many here will tell you that burning should be done at like 1 or 2 X. I however used mine at top speed 32X and they all work great, never an issue with speed.

  3. Thank you for the info.
Yesterday, I decided just to try something ang got a few clips off Kazaa.
I let Nero encode those clips. Unfortunately, my DVD refused to play VCD ("No disk").
I wonder if this fact is related to encoding was done by Nero right prior burning or it was related to my DVD (Sony DVPS550D) (altought, it supposed to play VCD, but I never-ever tried them before)

Don't make posts with so many questions !

Sat > Video out > PC capture card Video in
Sat > Audio out > PC sound card line in

Load TMPGEnc, click the "Load" button and load a VCD/SVCD template, it will show you what all the settings/spec are at the bottom.

Space, DivX AVI about 700Mb for a DVD rip, less for a capture
Space, about double for a Mpeg 1 (VCD)

make sure that test was done on a CD-RW, and not a CD-R-the older sonys don't like CD-R...
    End of Line.

  6. Thanks guys/gals. It WAS sony's DVD. I gave VCD I made to a friend and it worked. Now, I've got to a fight with WinTV USB tuner. The damn thing does not display video signal, yhough I can hear audio. (If you dealt with it, WinTV software that provides 'remote control' is not even funtioning on my Win XP box, I must run "Capture" application as standalone. And hell know how, I was able to get video/audion on the first try, but not anymore...)

I guess this is a subject for the new topic..
