I have a Canon ZR50 mc DVcam. It didn't come with video editing software. I have connected it to my laptop by firewire and am able to capture with Windows MovieMaker. I would like to use a better program. I have an old copy of Premiere 5. I loaded it on the laptop, but it doesn't recognize the DVcam. "None" is listed in the "control device". I'm thinking my version of Premiere might need a plug-in to recognize the firewire connection, but I can't find anything on Adobe's site. Does anyone have any idea if this is the problem? If I fork out the dough for Premiere 6 will my problems disappear?

Yep - 5 does not natively support DV whilst v6 does. If your capture worked in MovieMaker then it'll work in v6. (uses the same m$ capture codec).

Thanks. Downloaded the Premiere 6 tryout and it runs on it fine. Guess I'll have to give Adobe some more $.
My plan is to capture and edit with Premiere 6, convert with TMPGEnc (which I've never tried), and burn to VCD with a program I don't have yet. Any suggestions? -
You can't really go wrong with Nero for VCD & SVCD - just don't use it for DVD burning ... Free limited download available from www.nero.com
