Anyone out there install SP1 yet? If so I'd be interested in any comments concerning issues you encountered. To be more specific, any capture/conversion issues that you may have encountered after the install. I've downloaded it, but I'm waiting to hear more before I take the plunge. Thanks all......

I'm interested, too... but mainly in "does it screw up my computer"?

My XP machine seems to be working just fine without SP1. Add the worry about them messing with the activation #'s for KNOWN copies? I wonder if it'll make my 100% bought-and-paid-for copy of XP Pro Upgrade totally worthless?

Time will tell, and I'm not going to install until, like, maybe... 250,000 people do it first.

  3. i've upgraded to sp1 and had no issues what so ever with capturing or editing.. i am using an illegal version of the corporate edition also..

    you can find the procedure for circumventing microsofts attempts at stopping people with illegal corparate versions here;

    http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=guide&dId=350

i didnt have to follow this becuase i had recently re-installed xpprocrop with a clean serial #..

and just because you download all the updates doesnt mean you dont need sp1.. check this out http://grc.com/default.htm

    homerpez,
Just to let you know and anyone else that might care, I went a head and installed SP1 a few hours after my post. I guess curiousity got the best of me! Well the install went without a hitch, but after rebooting my system was running as slow as molasses. After a couple of more reboots I was greeted with a BSD (Blue Screen of Death) and couldn't boot back into Windows no matter what. As it turned out something had damaged the partition table and I was able to repair it by breaking out the old install disc and going into the recovery console. I'm not sure it had anything to do with it, but then again I don't have anything to disprove it either. As of this writing I'm in the middle of rebuilding my system because it was showing some signs of serious instabilty. However upon reinstalling Windows I went and installed SP1 immediately afterwards before installing anything else and it's running smooth as can be. I guess I'm a sucker for punishment but I had to find out and it seems to be working. I recommend to everyone to wait till your next format and reinstall unless you have some compelling reason to do otherwise. Forgive me for any typo's, but at the moment my spell checker isn't working!

    See?

I think I'll skip this one... unless I come across something that simply WON'T run without it (I doubt that)...

I still have nightmares from a work computer I installed 2000 SP 1 on... stopped working immediately. Couldn't run IE, or any other programs, without an instant memory crash. Uninstalled SP1, everythig worked again.

Another one broke after I installed 2000 SP 2... I had to do the "over-the-top" install like you did to retrieve it...

Overall, these supposed "Service Packs" are not worth the trouble, and I can't risk the "Blue Screen Of Death"... not NOW!!!!

  8. I run 98SE and I also had to download the service pack. 15MB for me because I keep this thing updated pretty well. I also wondered if it would kill my machine. I backed my work up onto CDRW first. I only did it because I heard the hole was HUGE and very dangerous. I downloaded and installed, no problems She ran a little slow after restart, then I restarted again and she worked great.

Yes, I've installed the latest WinXP SP1. Downloaded 133Mb of it last week as an .exe file. This taken a while, hours and hours to download and just as well I was out somewhere. A long time with a 56k modem.

Download it, why not. My Win XP computer is an improvement since, the computer's performance is now much better with some bugs cleaned out.

The Norton Anti-Virus 2001 is now compatible with a patch from Symantec Corporation, thanks to the fix included in the SP1. There is nothing I could find regarding capturing and conversion issues here.

My video card installation CD is still incompatible and this made no difference to me. Anyway, the video card driver is setup by Microsoft as a display adapter: NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro. No problem there and the capturing drivers were downloaded from their web site and I managed to secure a DVR program for it and got it to work. The installation CD is still useless.

Check it out here for the bugs and fixes using SP1: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/ServicePacks/Windows/XP/SP1FixList.asp

    CJGS,
Thanks for the reply but I've already taken the plunge. The first attempt turned into a total disaster as stated in an earlier post, but after doing a clean install and then applying the service pack everything went smoothly. I've been up and running for the last 6 days now without so much as a hiccup. No application errors, no nothing. It doesn't get much better than that.
As to you individuals who reported back on your service pack for Windows 98 the topic was about Windows XP.
