  1. Hi all,
I have a question regarding the DVD2SVCD program.
In the encoder tab (I'm using CEE 2.5) there is an option to change the image quality priority. it is set by default on 17.
I didn't quite understand what should I do, raise or lower this number if I want to get BETTER quality in complex, detailed scenes. (fast action scenes get messy with lotsa pixels)

Does this variable has any connection to improving the quality of the movie and if so to which number should I set it?

    Thanks alot.

  2. yes it does. I go against the trend (20 - 24) and run image quality
at 3. This, in my experience, gives me the best overall visual quality
    - except for some logos and small text lines. To counter this I manually
adjust the bitrate/quality at the begining & end of the movie.

I do image complexity at 5 and Q=15-25 based on input and desired output size.

  4. what is this "Q" thing ... ?
I see I can only change it when choosing one pass VBR .. is it better than multipass VBR?

I have testet a lot with DVD2SVCD, and must say that multipass encoding gives the best quality in picture.

I make 3 passes, with this settings

    max 2550 kb/s
    avbr 2300kb/s
    min 1000 kb/s

    do not use min avbr!!!

Than for the most movies i get the best results with an Image Quality value of 20, for fast action movies i use 15-17 in the IQ.

Anything between 10 and 20 is ok, lower values, produce good quality in fast action scenes but, gives a lot of Mosquito noise, on still pictures and slow scenes,

Use also BiCubic resize, and use a temporal smoother filter, with this value 2 / 1

the avbr bitrate should never be below 1700 kb/s when using the standard matrices in cce, to give good quality.

When not already testet, try a GOP lenght of 12 (default in cce is 15) this gives alsp a little improvment in the quality.

I cap from tv and use heave NR.

I found even 3 pass did not give the smooth action shots/panning that one pass VBR with a Q setting less than 30 gave me. Just a personal prefrence I guess. I also use the 12 frame GOP as well it help to produce sharper/cleaner images.

  7. I also use 12 GOP and avisynth filters such as:
    TomsMoComp(0,15,1) , Convolution3d(8,16,0) ,Levels(8,.97,251,0,252) amongst others. CCE really shines @ 4 pass
when the source is excellent, but when substandard you really need
to tweak your settings to get the best results - and this with
experience will change for almost every movie/cap/rip. I guess I
write a whole new script for just about every second encode these
    days

  8. in the DVD2SVCD program in the bitrate tab, I can control only the number of cd's to put for each movie length ...
how can I change the bitrate like min, max and average values?
and it seems that if I raise the number of cd's per movie length, it doesn't really matters cause it adds another cd with, say 400kb movie on it ..

is there a way to increase the number of cd's i wanna use for the svcd in order to improve quality?

    thanks alot.

SVCD has a limited bitrate of 2700kbps 9 or about combinted audio + video ). So basicly take the movie leangth and double it. That's the MAXIMIM that DVD2SVCD can encode at and keep it within specs.

It 90 minute movie can only use 180minutes of "dics" giving it 3 80 minute disks would be a waiste of 60 minutes.

  10. snowmoon,
so in order to get the max quality i should double the length of the movie and choose the muber of cd's according to this?
is there any point in changing the min, max, average bitrate in order to improve quality and if so how do i do it>

btw, are there any programs which can give me more than 2700 kbps?

    ofershac:

It's not the program, CCE can encode all the way up to 9.8Mbps, it's the format SVCD only technically supports 2x or ~2700kbps.

Try increasing the MaxBitrate=XXXX setting in SVCD-settings.ini to see if DVD2SVCD will allow you a higher bitrate. Also raise MaxAVG=XXXX as well.

THE SVCD WILL MORE THAN LIKLEY NOT PLAY IN YOUR DVD PLAYER.
