An affluent friend with broadband connection (I hate him!!) has just downloaded Signs (you know, the Mel Gibson movie) but its in two 810mb mpeg pieces (not DivX). Rather than re-encode it to mpeg 1 I thought it would be quicker to join it and cut it into useful sized segments and burn it to vcd or svcd as appropriate. The problem is I dont know if its mpeg 1 or 2. How can I tell?

    I would use this tool:

    http://www.tecoltd.com/bitratev.htm

Chances are it is a PAL SVCD (a lot of the pirated SVCDs are PAL)...depending on your player you might be able to just burn it and play.

Regardless of the format, I wouldn't do any cutting or joining. Each of those 810 MB files will fit on a CD-R.
    End of Line.
