If you don't want to use a commercial hack like the NTFS drivers for 98 you would have to switch to 2000 or XP (or NT, but I wouldn't recommend that for digital video work because of the lack of hardware support).

If you run Windows 98 and you can change it, i would recommend Windows 2000 or XP. I have both, but I think Windows 2000 works better at least for burning DVD-R's. The NTSF for Windows 98 is a solution only when you need to keep Windows 98 but only the Read Only version is free (to my knowledge). Read Only in this case means that you can read a NTFS volume but you cannot write to it which in your case is useless. The full version is 50 $. Also I don't trust NTFS support in Windows 98. On the other hand Windows 2000 and Windows XP have native NTFS support since WIndows NT and no Windows 98 NTFS enabler can beat that.
If you want reliability I'd go for Windows 2000\XP. If you don't plan to use Windows 98 on the same computer with one of these two OS's, and also don't plan to start the computer with a Windows 9x startup disk to acess drives then after you install Windows 2000/XP and convert to NTFS, you won't feel the difference in using FAT32 of NTFS (except that NTFS is far superior).

Go for it, and good luck !

  5. If you want to retain DOS bootability to access your data (or at least parts of it) you could upgrade to XP (been so long, maybe 2000 does it, too) and leave your system drive as FAT32 but convert your data drive NTFS. Only one drive you say? Then upgrade the whole partition to NTFS. It really is the better way to go. FAT is dead.

  6. real bad idea. I agree with the others.
Windows has enought problems let alone having to try to deal with an "non-native" filesystem
Win2k has worked out for me so far
