is capture quality determined by the card used or the software used to capture? i'm talking about capturing to .avi, not real time mpeg encoding or anything like that.

capture quality is determed first by the source quality.
then cable in between
then your hardware / system (you dont need a powerfull computer to capture video -- in fact a p2 400 works great capturing full D1 @ 30fps, with the right capture card and software)
the software part of it doesnt come in to being as importaint except how well it does it job of A. not dropping frames B. if software compressing - how well does it work with the compressor. C. how does it handle larger than 2gig avi's
