what DVD player should I buy if a want to play both american and european dvds? Thanks

(Almost) all DVD players sold in europe will play both PAL and NTSC discs properly. What you need to check is wether it outputs NTSC as PAL-60 or as actual NTSC or if you have a choice. You also need to be sure that your TV will handle the Pal-60 or NTSC signal. Again, most modern european TV's will handle NTSC and PAL-60 even though the manufacturers may not advertise the fact.

So it really comes down to what can your TV handle, and can the DVD player be made region free. The DVD players list on the left of this page is good for region-free info.
