Does one need different software to handle/playback these?

HDTVtoMPEG doesn't work, can't find any files, the mpeg2 mod of virtualdub can't open it, and having an mpeg2 directshow filter isn't enough to play it in media player ...

Maybe h264 video? Try identify the ts with mediainfo and see what it says.

And try play with VLC Media Player or Haali Media Splitter together with ffdshow and play with MPC.

    maybe h264 video what?

Mediainfo says its mpeg2 transport stream (MPEG-2TS)

VLC plays it, but vlc is a little universe of it's own, I'd like to handle it "outside" as it were. Possibly find some way to extract subs and perhaps encode to divx.

I tried getting Haali Media Splitter but there is no download on the page that videohelp links to, and the mirror link doesn't work. (There is a MatroskaSplitter, but that produces an mkv file - which wasn't the plan

Don't write true in all uppercase, it sounds like you accuse me of lying. I grabbed it myself with DVBDream

The matroskasplitter download is haali media splitter and it decodes ts files (and mkvs also).

And what happens if you click on the mirror download? It works fine from here.

Some mpeg ts streams may contain h264 video instead mpeg2 video.

Already tried to demux with xport.exe

    Code:
    [C:\]
    =>xport
    xport Transport Stream Demuxer 1.00

    Usage:
            xport <-pavtdszgh2> <infile> <program number> <video stream number> <aud
    io stream number>

    Options:
p = parse only, do not demux to video and audio files
            a = dump audio PTS
            v = dump video PTS
t = GOP timecode mode, count repeated fields/frames
d = dump all PID's (useful for debugging muxers, but tons of output)
s = suppress TS rate dumping (useful when piping output to a file)
z = demux to PES streams (instead of elementary streams)
g = dump ATSC PSIP information
h = input file is in HDMV (AVCHD and Blu-ray) format (192 byte packets)
2 = only extract 2 channels of HDMV LPCM audio from multi-channel tracks

The hard part with xport is determining the transport stream PID values. Tsremux is easier (but slower)

You have to right click on the stream to demux it

Then you can load the elementary video stream in DGAVCindex

Read the docs on frameserving the resulting .DGA file via Avisynth.

Hm.. i can only get it to make mkv files. Does it install files which are needed to play back files in windows media player? I tried installing ffdshow and nothing worked. Then after i had installed haali media splitter media player suddenly started to play back the transport streams (no subs though)

I got an error message when i tired earlier. But it works here no as well. Must have been a transient error.

Not already, but have now - and I can't get the program to work. It just keeps printing the banner no matter what combination of switches I try.

That may have been my problem with xport.

Well slower is ok as long as we don't count it in days - however Tsremux only shows the audio and video tracks (would be nice to extract the subs)

Is only possible If subs were even transmitted.
You really know that the station sent subs within??

The program is subtitled on air, and in the player which came with the usb receiever (if you switch it on - but you can't extract) and projectx says there are several other tracks in the ts, includeing something i think is the subs.

    You think ...well.

But what exactly have you used to record the TS??

Yes, because there is a subtitle icon and the langauge matches (in ProjectX - but i have no idea how you extract with that program)

Try opening the ts file with PVAStrumento and convert it to another format

    https://www.videohelp.com/tools/PVAStrumento

There is an option in DVBDream to record directly to mpeg, it is less hassle, you can play the file with PowerDVD or VideoLan or even with DVBDream itself.

Thank you, but by now the problem isn't getting a proper mpg stream, but getting the other content extracted from the transport stream.

I'm sorry. I read all of it and none of it appeared to be relevant:

I don't want to convert the ts file to another format with PVAStrumento - but if I do - I either get an mpg file where the other streams have been removed. Or i get a sound and video track but none of the other streams.

I don't want to record directly to mpg since the extra streams would not be included in this file(if i just wanted a standard mpg i could use the software which came with the hardware).

So I don't see any solution in your message.

    ???

No - I don't realize that. There was no solution to my question - why is it impolite to say so? His reply was impolite (suggesting I didn't read what he said), but mine wasn't. Unless you can explain why? (I'm betting you won't)

I don't lose anything - I said you weren't going to explain why you thought it was rude - and you didn't.

And as I said I have read his answer. YOU should read my answer and see why i said it wasn't relevant.

If you think it is in anyway relevant you explain why you think it is - unless you are trolling.

Maybe you can find out the stream numbers in projectx and demux video and audio streams with xport (using the stream info from projectx)? I think I did this way with some h.264 .ts recordings I made with DVBViewer. You might also be able to demux the subtitle stream with projectx.

Sometimes you need several programs to get what you need from the recorded transport stream. But you may get problems later when trying to synch everything...
