  1. Recently I captured some video using HuffyVU (25 minutes, 720x480, 29.97 FPS) and ran the resulting file thru TMPEG using the same template I always use... 720x480, 2Pass VBR, Avg=5400,2000-8000.

The resulting MPEG2 file was 1.8 gigabytes!

I usually capture to DIVX 480x480 and convert to MPEG2 using the same template. Resulting file in that case is ~ 900 megs.

Why the huge difference? I thought that since the size and frame rates for the MPEG are the same, i should get similar output file sizes.

    Thanks!

uuuummmm, what is the bitrate that you use for your SVCDs?

I doubt you are using a 5400 kbps average like you did for the 720x480 video...the settings you are talking about sound like DVD settings, and 1.3 gig doesn't sound so big for DVD video.

Also, I would not recommend capturing to DIVX and then going to MPEG-2, DIVX is lossy as hell. You should capture to Huffy or PicVideo and then convert.

"I thought that since the size and frame rates for the MPEG are the same"

But the size isn't the same...720x480 is bigger than 480x480, and a 5400 kbps average is over twice the MAX standard bitrate for SVCD.

There is a huge (bitrate) difference between DVD and SVCD, that is why there is a huge difference in your file sizes. That is just basic knowlege.
    End of Line.

  3. The outputted MPEG2 is 720x480 in both cases, 5400/2000-8000 2Pass VBR in both cases, 29.97 FPS in both cases, and so on.... all MPEG attributes of the two files are the same. Why would one file be twice the size of another? And yes, these are for DVD.

I capture to DIVX because I capture 5 or 6 hours at a time. Try doing that with Huffy

    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks

    And I quote...

"I usually capture to DIVX 480x480 and convert to MPEG2 using the same template. Resulting file in that case is ~ 900 megs."

Are you saying that you are capturing at 480x480 and then UPsizing to 720x480??? I don't think that would look very good at all.

As far as 5-6 hour captures...you might want to try the PicViceo codec...I have never used it but it compresses more than Huffy, and it has settings to increse the compression if you want to.
    End of Line.

  5. If you are using 2-pass VBR, the average bitrate will essentially guarantee the exact same filesize for a given video sequence regardless of any other parameters except the length of the video. If you really are using 2-pass and the second output is substantially larger than the first with the same bitrate settings, I can only conclude that the second video is much longer than the first. Lower the bitrate for the second video or use more CDs.

Picvideo's mjpeg codec is great. It can tend to be buggy, but that's probably related to my hardware. You can choose quality from 1-20. Generally, you won't be able to tell much of a difference, if you capture between 17-20 quality. Choosing 17 will compress your file around 7-8 times.

Picvideo is also nicer on your CPU.

    hmm
Capturing at 480x480 and getting 900~ MB

But at 720x480 its over 1.8 Gigs..
    Self Explanatory.
Considering a 5 minute DVD Spec Slip is aroun 170-200 MB.
Your Well Withing Spec File Size for those settings.

One File is 480x480 Which is Almost 1/2 of the 1.8 GB File..
    Think about it

lol...that is what I was thinking, Overlord...but he says this :

"The outputted MPEG2 is 720x480 in both cases"...
    End of Line.

    1.8 GB for 25 minutes = 9.8mbps

Sounds like your template is screwed.
