  1. i'm having a bit of trouble in the enoding stage of making an svcd. i'm just testing out a 10min file i ripped from dvd, and my first results have like "motion lines" at odd times when i play it on my dvd player.

    here's what i'm doing...
ripping with smartripper, syncing with dvd2avi, getting audio with vob2audio, then using tmpgenc plus with toolame and ssrc to encode, then using nero to burn.

i had no problems making a good vcd. now, i have an svcd template and the settings are basically:

    2pass vbr
    2520 kbit
    112kb buffer
    mp@ml
    ntsc
    non-interlace

with the encode i just did, i stated it was from a 16:9 source, and encoded it to 4:3. i didn't use any filters. right now i'm trying setting it to encode to a 16:9 source. i wasn't sure which one to use... the aspect ratio looked perfect on my first try.

now my questions to get rid of this 'noise'. will the noise reduction filter help any? it takes so long with that enabled. should i be using 2pass vbr, or is there a better setting? what about the rest of the settings.

    any input is appreciated

If you are getting the venetion blins effect. You may need to FORCE FILM the dvd2avi step.

When using DVD2AVI if the source is NTSC film which the vast majority are, check off the forced film option under field operations and give that a try. One thing you should notice is that your encoding times in TMPEGnc should decrease since you not processing as many frames and should clear up those interlacing artifacts.

  4. alright, forced film syncs the framrate at 23.976fps... should i modify this setting in tmpgenc as well, or leave tmpgenc to encode it at 29.97fps?

    ToXiC,
when you load up the d2v file in TMPEGnc it should detect it as a film movie and automatically invoke 3:2 pulldown. Go to other settings and check encode mode, it should say 3:2 pulldown on playback. Also at frame rate which will be grayed out it should say: 23.976fps (internally 29.97fps). Then encode as you normally would.

i see what you mean, but it does not automatically detect and set those settings. i just used the unlock.mcf to un-greyout those fields and changed them manually. i have it running now.

with the settings at 29fps and non-interlaced, i got the same results.

First off you don't need to unlock the template. In step 2 of the wizard if it says in the "Content of video" field: Video Movie, change it to Film Movie and the rest of the settings will fall into place. I think what your trying to do is convert it back out to 29.97fps and you don't have to since your player will detect the 3:2 pull-down flags and play it normally. If you select inverse telecine it will convert it back out to 29.97fps, but you'll end up with the Venetian blind effect every time.
