  1. when converting an .avi movie to an .mpg with TMPEnc, do you HAVE to extract entire uncompressed 1gb+ sized .wav file from Virtual dub? or can you just extract the audio with "direct stream copy". But if you do have to... do you HAVE to encode it to an .mp2 format after that? I keep hearing different things.

    I'm thinking there's something about this that makes my vcd's video speed up and slow down at some points in the movie.

    You don't need to extract anything, just load the AVI into TMPGEnc as it is... Having said that if you get any problems with lip sync, then you may need to save the WAV in Vdub, uncompressed at 44.1kHz.

    Even AC3 handles fine in TMPGEnc.

    At leased, I would scan the AVI for junk frames, none found move on to TMPGEnc

  3. so... if after you convert the entire .avi to .mpg and there's no sound, you extract the full 1gb-sized uncompressed .wav from VirtualDub? Then you use TMPGEnc and use "file --> mpeg tools" to input the .mpg, input the .wav/.mp2 and output the final .mpg? So this will work and the audio/vid will be in sync?

    ::edit::
    seems you can only input .mp2 as audio streams..

    If you hit the start button, you can stop it after a few minuets to check the output. There are a few things that can cause no sound.

    Top of the list is not having the audio codec installed. That could be AC3 even, but what ever it its, TMPGEnc can handle it. (Nimo codec pack)

    Next in the list is the DirectShow priority
    Select options > environmental settings
    click the VFAPI plug-in tab
    right click the "DirectShow" and select higher priority, do this several times until its at the top with a value of 4

    Finally Junk frames can cause sync problems, but they are not usually associated with no sound at all. So the sound would need to be uncompressed in Vdub for use with TMPGEnc

    Audio > full processing mode
    Audio > Conversion > 44.1Khz
    SAVE WAV

  5. You will need uncompress wave file when you confront out of sync issue or have no sound in your mpeg.

    All you need to do is load avi file as a video source and load wave file as an audio, then you encode as normal. you dont need to convert to mp2 or anything. So in this case I suggest you try only short clip like 2 mins first to see if you get any of these issue. And that you don't have to encode twice.
