does nero tells me if the mpeg is wrong?
If nero doesn`t complain is it ok then?
can i burn a renamed dat file?
Can i check in mpeg properties if it is the right mpeg

probably depends on the dat file you use.
If it is compatible file nero will let you drop it in ok.
open up vcd dialogue and then click on mpeg bit in left and drag and drop in file from right. Should work fine.
note if it is not encoded as vcd type mpeg nero will come up with non-compatible do you want to continue, doing this leaves a file that certain things don't play, I can only get Xing player to watch these types on the PC but my stand alone DVD player plays them fine.
Basically as in everything try it out.

    I have a Wharfdale 750 S and a German built SM one
OK they are both pretty well budget machines but they play nearly everything fine. I had an older SM before though and it struggled to play VCD's, got to PCM ON and then dipped out. If I persevered they did work eventually. Sometimes just waiting for a while and keep on asking it to play would help to get it to work.
So players can be temperamental but have you tried differnet media, try burning to a CDRW disc cos that sometimes helps, or try one that has as dark a coating as possible - you know like a playstation disc. Some lasers have difficulty reading discs if the light is not all coming back - I know some will shoot me down over all this, but I have tried various discs and the darker ones were generally better . But note although I have no real probs now I have had probs with certain CD types and then after keeping using the same type the player seems to get used to reading them and then no more problems.
Also if its hacked have you considered the player hack is not too good and/or the mod chip is not up to scratch.
    Hope you get on OK
