  1. I know similar posts have been introduced before, but I have yet to find a solution for my situation. I have a video file that is using the MS MPEG4v3 codec for video and WMAv2 for audio. The movie PLAYS FINE in WMP 7.1 in Win 98. What I wish to do is encode it in any other format so it can be played on a MAC. The only program I have found that can even parse the video on a mac is called mPlayer, and then it can't even decode the audio!

I have tried working with the movie on my PC, and have found no solution. All suggestions made in these forums have been fruitless for me. I have downloaded and installed nemo codec pack, tried TMPGEnc 2.5.7, and VirtualDub 1.4. TMPGEnc gives an error stating that the format is unsupported. VirtualDub says that support for MS MPEG4v3 was removed after 1.3d because of legal concern. In addition I have also downloaded just about every other program searchable on the net for conversion.

What I would like to know is if there is a PROVEN way to encode a MS MPEG4v3 video to anything else, ie quicktime, mpg, real, wmv, divx etc.? Does anyone know where I can download a version of VirtualDub pre 1.3d? I had moderate success with ASFTools but that was an earlier version (2.4)than what is current (3.1); unfortunately the current release is unavailable from the website. Does anyone know where I might be able to get this from? Thanks a lot in advance for any help and advice.

  2. Well, I am kicking myself in the head right now! On a frustrated whim, I decided to change the extension from .mpeg to .asf in OSX and voila! After confirming the change, the file proceded to play fine in WMP 7.1 fine in OSX. The file previously did not play with the mpeg extension in WMP 7.1 on OSX, so apparently it was just the F'in extension causing the problem!

Anyway, I have seemed to of answered my post for Microsoft MPEG4v3 on a Mac. But if anyone has a comment on converting the file to a quicktime compatible codec, please post. I am still in the dark on this one. Thanks.
