  1. Hello all!

I just converted a small Div-X file into an Mpeg.

    I used TMPGENc for conversion

The Div-x was encoded in a 58kb/s (is that kilo bits or kbytes? kbits i guess huh?)

    I set up the mpeg destination for a 464bits /sec (58*8)

the file size was somewhat the same (mpeg was a bit more)
but the quality of the mpeg was waaaaaay to crappy....

Same quality was achieved only when the mpeg was encoded with a 2000b/s or so - but the file size was way larger!!

Is this all because Mpeg and Div-x Bitrate are different?!

    cheers
    Lee

bitrate is more like a gallon of water vs a cup of water being poured at one time.thi is what takes up actual disc space.

compresion is more like gallon of water vs a gallon of, shh.. i dunno.. soup are some other thick liquid.

codecs are another thing all together

at same bitrate divx has higher compression
but mpeg is king of high action(bitrate) scenes

sorry for the bad analogies but do you want quality or extra space

  3. didnt get ur point

i prefer quality other then miss used space

actually d crappy scenes are those with most action / movements
    too many blocks sort of

so why divx and mpeg @ same b/rate gave same results?
    still havent undestood it >_<

the only way to truly test this is to reencode from a indepedent source both to divx and mpeg. there is some quality lost at every encode especially from "x" to divx. then divx to mpeg. with "x" being the original source from which your divx was encoded from. i bet if you encode from the original, then mpeg will win. i find that slight blockingness in a divx file will be amplified greatly unless encoded with a high multipass and at the highest levels.

  5. hmm true? cool
honestly I prefer Mpeg rather then div-x

but do you think mpeg will truly win? nearly everyone says that for better quality and lesser space div-x is d one...

dunno - prolly matter of opinions
but divx cant be played on dvd's so it sux >_<
