  1. Can someone tell me why I'm getting this wierd, colorful static in my video clips in Vegas?

    http://rfmwa.tripod.com/vv3cap.htm

It only does this with my captures from TV. I've been able to capture DV from my camera and edit it just fine.

This is a capture with VirtualVCR, btwincap drivers, huffyuv, 640x480... the specs on the file are visible in the "Media Pool" tab on the image I linked to above. The only way I can see the preview is to view it "Display at Project Size" with the Properties set to the "NTSC Square Pixel (640x480, 29.97 fps)" Template. Otherwise it looks psycho like in the time line and media pool. Sound is fine and the preview playback is good... as long as it's "project size."

I've tried numerous settings... I can open it in Premiere 6 and it's ok... looks fine in VirtualDub... If I deinterlace it, it opens ok in Vegas. I tried rendering a sample mpeg-1 since I could see it in the preview, but all I got was the psychoscramble with sound.

This is really baking my noodle. Any suggestions?

  2. I discovered the same thing AND the cause.

If you do a capture in Virtual Dub and use huffy compression that will happen. Same with any capture program I have found so far. It doesn't do it with other compressions like MJPEG but then the colors are washed out. If you capture it with Vegas Video 3 (which is outstanding for capture BTW but the sound echo is annoying but it doesn't affect the captured sound) it will capture as an uncompressed avi which you can render to a huffy format avi and it will be fine, BUT in huffy configuration if you select convert to YUY2 in the right hand selection it will go like that again even if done in VV3.

Now I have a question for you. If you render when its in project size is it OK or still a cluster of colors on the video file?

Does anyone know why this is the cause of it?

PS: If you look closely you will see you video is upside down AND I think backwards.

Even when the preview is ok in project size I still get the colors in a rendered file. That's what I was talking about when I said I made a sample mpeg. It's like it renders how the timeline looks and not what you see in the preview window.

Caused by the Huffyuv compressor, huh? That seems odd. You can render files in Huffyuv from Vegas, but it won't read them. I'll have to play around with it some more. like I said, I can open these kind of captures in Premiere, but I think Vegas is more enjoyable to work in.

Thanks for your reply. It helps to at least know someone else has the same problem. Oh, I did notice they are upside down and backwards.

  4. well if you caoture the video uncompressed with say VV3 and use the UVYV setting (I thinks thats it) then use Huffy compression but leave both settings on best for that and it will be fine.

  5. Yup... that worked. I messed around with the settings and got VV3 to capture 640x480 while getting a 360x240 preview. Works ok... sound is bad though... sounds kind of distorted and muffled. I get great sound with VirtualVCR. I have my composite sound cables going straight to my Soundblaster MP3+.

But I could open the captured file in Vegas without the weird colors. I got it to work with UYVY and YUY2. Didn't try any others. I get a bad "hum bar" at the top of the video though with Vegas also.

I prefer VirtualVCR still , but I'll keep messing with Vegas. Thanks for the help.

[edit]: Forget what I said about the sound. I forgot I was trying a different arrangement and had my cable running thru a VCR instead of the Digital Cable box. The VCR has crappy sound. I normally run sound from the cable box to the sound card.

  6. Hmmm...VV3 had great capture for me.

Try plugging the sound into the card and tell me if when recording if the sound echos. Its fine in the video playback but echos when capturing.

The secret to using other capture programs with VV3 is to not use any compression and then use Huffy in VV3. All others have loss. Even MJPEG has washed out colors and such.

  7. I did some reasearch. Well actually I emailed Sonic Fonudry and they do not support Huffy format and now VV3 has problems with it. But as I said above there is a work around for using it. Its all in the settings.

  8. I didn't notice any echo when making captures. Too bad they don't support capture with Huffyuv. At least you can render output with it. I'd like to see someone come up with an Avisynth plugin for Vegas.

  9. Thanks, I turned off preview sound and problem solved. I think I was hearing the incoming sound and then the encoded sound with a slight delay due to the processing. I used to have a program that when recording the voice was out of sync but in sync once recorded due to that. Turning off the preview solves the problem as the sound is in sync in the novie its just annoying with an echo when your recording it but now I only get the incomming sound with the preview off.

It seems many of the professional programs capture in uncompressed format for various reasons. Seems everyone has a favorite codec and compressing while capturing with several codecs can lead to sound sync problems from what I have read. So they capture uncompressed and then let you save it compressed if you want in any codec that makes you happy.
