I decided to try my Powershot out today to see if I could make a short movie. The Canon software only produces mov files, but there is a conversion to avi available. I turned the file into an avi and put it on the time line. The video does not show, but the audio does. Actually, the video produces about 3-4 frames in 9 sec. My guess is that I shot the mov file in HD. I'll try with 640x480 later. Comments?

  2. why are you converting it ?

install quicktime and import the mov into vegas

this way there is no quality loss

Vegas takes mov files? Why through QT? I had no trouble when I went to a 640x480 format? The resulting avi file played fine.

Which model Powershot? Most use the MJPEG codec in a mov wrapper. For those you need to install an MJPEG codec before Vegas will import.

Other Powershot models use h.264 in a transport stream wrapper. Some are so called AVCHD Lite which needs special handling to import for Vegas.

Use Mediainfo on the file and post View-Text data here. First we need to know the format for your camera.

Canon Powershot 300 HS. Their tech's say only mov out is it. Apparently, it may be wrapped MJPEG as you suggest. How do I get the codec?

Because vegas 9 reads mov wrapped videos through quicktime

This way you incur no quality loss, no time wasted re-encoding, no resizing or resolution loss

You just import them as is.

From Canon spec sheet, your Elph records

Video: MOV (Image: H.264; Audio: Linear PCM (stereo))

Others may know a free conversion. You can try Quicktime Pro to convert for Vegas.

  8. It doesn't matter if it's h.264 or mjpeg, the free version of quicktime is enough (no need to convert) to import mov clips into vegas

Where do I find a Win 7 QT? When I Google, I get downloads for iTunes? I didn't see anything under "free" Quicktime link above.
