Hello. I've been bouncing around guides but can't seem to find out how to do what I would like to do.

So, I am using DVD2AVI to create a d2v and ac3 file from a set of VOBs. I then use VFAPI to create a pseudo-AVI file which I am able to load directly (very cool) into my editing software (Vegas). This works great and I am able to get high-quality audio-video output with zero problems.

Now, for my latest movie, I want to add a permanent subtitle track. I can read the VFAPI avi into Virtualdub and insert the subtitles (ripped to a .srt file with Subrip) and the output screen looks great. Problem is, how do I get it into Vegas at the highest possible quality that's doable. I can save to an AVI directly from Virtualdub, which I guess would be ideal, except it projects the final AVI size as 170 gigs (1.5 gigs for 3 minutes).

I tried to use the frameserver of Virtualdub, but Vegas will not read in the frameserver(signpost) file(even after renaming to .avi). Probably because it would be a frameserver(Virtualdub) of a frameserver(VFAPI) from a VOB.

So what I was hoping to do, is to make an AVI which contains only the subtitles with of course the correct timing. I would then overlay this track onto the main movie in Vegas. The quality of the subs wouldn't necessarily have to be great (small file size), just so the text looks good.

Any tips/suggestions, or other solution than an overlayed AVI?

Thanks!

Tom
