  1. Ok, this question regards to movies I download off KaZaa. New realeases avi. Split in 2 parts. Sometimes 3 (aka lord of the rings). The files are hardly ever over 200 mbs. Now I can't convert ANY of these files to vcd so I can burn them. Using TMPGEnc all it says in the wizard is that it cannot add the file or it is unsuported. Is there a step i'm missing? eg. Decompressing/Compressing or sumtin like that? Thx...I did a Divx.avi file. THe screen res. for that was aprox. 600x 260. THat worked. These files are about 354x240 or around there. i'll be on a quite a bit so feel free to ask little questions if you don't understand the problem 2 well. My Specs are in my profile.

    Hey . . .

When you open the AVI file up in Virtual Dub, what does the "file information" option under the file menu tell you about the file? eg framrate/size, audio encoding etc . . .

    More information is good!!!

    Cheers,

    B.

    Hi matey,

I assume you are converting files with the prefix '.avi'. Well, all you really need is the DivX codec. I use version 3.11. You can get this off the net, just seach for divx codec. They say that version 5.0 messes round with TMPGEnc a bit so I would steer clear of downloading that one.

That should enable you to at least get your file loaded into TMPGEnc. Another little tip for you, encode about a minute of the file and then try it using media player or something similar. I download from KaZaa myself and find that a lot of the films have compressed audio that TMPGEnc can't encode. If this is the case and your played back mpeg is silent, you will need to decompress the audio to pcm before loading into TMPGEnc. I use the Audio Decompress program that is included with Virtual Dub (Think you can download this off the net too)

Hope this helps. See ya...... 8)

    Hey . . .

Thanks for that - now for the bad news!! *wry smile*

You'll have problems no matter what format you convert to - PAL is 25fps, NTSC is 29.97 and NTSC film is 23.97. You've got 15fps, so whatever proggy u use to convert to a vcd format will have to interpolate the extra frames - in my experience, this doesn't give you the smoothest end-result.

andyg makes a good point about the audio - it's quite possible that you'll need to uncompress the audio to a PCM format WAV file, and then when you re-encode in TmpgEnc, for example, use that WAV file as the audio source.

    Cheers,

    B.
