Neither dolby digital nor ac3 audio are possible on a vcd or svcd. The best you can do is do a dolby surround downmix which can be decoded as dolby surround, dolby prologic, or dolby prologic II.

If you have a Philiips dvd player and an audio decoder capable of "multichannel mpeg audio" then you may want to do a forum search on this subject. It can preserve the 5.1 signals but almost no dvd player/decoder combination can properly play it so its hardly even worth mentioning.

Just one thing Dolby Digital and Ac3 are the same.

Yep, the only chance you have is to a down-mix. Dolby Pro-Logic 2 is the best but only the newest receivers support it, but if your receiver supports it go for it. I use the the Dolby Surround downmix with azid and it gets good results. The only real disadvantage to this method is that with dolby surround or prologic 1 the two rear channels lose their stereo effect. Meaning that both the speakers combine their signals. Today I tested making an ac3 cd and also included a dolby surround downmix of the same tracks. The digital track had better directionality and was a little clearer but Dolby Surround still did a good job.

Man7 Dolby Digtial and Ac3 are not the same thing. They are both encoding methods but in a different way. Its more like Dolby Digital is the audio encoding method and Ac3 is the container.

Its entirely possible to have an Ac3 file on a dvd without having it be Dolby Digital. For instance the Dolby 2.0 track is stored as an Ac3 file as well. Some dvds don't even have a Dolby Digital track.

Exactly, I see a lot of people referring to ac3 and Dolby Digital as one and the same. Kind of like how the avi format is carrier for different types of media.

  7. Dolby Digital, also known as Dolby 5.1 or AC3, is the surround sound encoding system used for nearly all DVD movies. There are more and more DVD titles encoded using DTS, another multichannel format. However, Dolby Digital is far more common and that will likely remain the case for the foreseeable future.

  8. To stop possible confusion from spreading (it is obvious that it already has), you cannot downmix to "Dolby Pro Logic II".

You can ONLY downmix to "Dolby Surround".

Pro Logic and Pro Logic II are decoding methods only.
