What's the main difference between DTS 5.1 & Dolby Digital AC3 5.1.
Do you prefer DTS or Dolby Digital ?
I have DVD9 DVDs & I want to encode them to DVD5.
They are having audio options - DTS & DD.
Which is better?

DTS 5.1 @1536kb/s will sound better than AC3 5.1 @448kb/s
But since you are encoding to DVD5, you probably want to use the lower audio bitrate option of 448kb/s AC3 (to save more room for video bitrate) , unless the running time is very short -
dts is usually included as an "extra". dd(ac-3) or pcm required on all ntsc dvds to be in spec, mpeg audio also allowed for pal.

You need a good sound system to notice the difference. Just play the disc and make a judgment based on your sound system and ears.

I'm with pdr. DTS takes up more space that could be given to improving the video quality, and without superior audio equipment it can't be said to sound any better.

Even with so-called "superior audio equipment" I don't think anyone could ever tell the difference between dts 5.1 and Dolby 5.1. Even though they use different bit rates that is no guarantee that the one using a higher bit rate is going to sound better than a different codec using a lower bit rate.
Why?
Because they are different codecs using differing methodology of bit rate and masking theories. Some engineers are just better at doing these things than others are.
Doing double blind testing, I seriously doubt that anyone on this earth could repeatedly hear the difference. -
I enjoy DTS but not ALL DTS soundtracks are equal. If you're doing DVD5 I'd go with the Dolby.
