Ok.
I know this questions have been asked before in this post but the answers don't seem to help me. Thats why im posting this wich is more specific for my problem.
My goal is to make a smooth running Svcd that i can play on my standalone DVD-player.
My problem is the usual stuttering. The movie works fine and so does the audio, but the stuttering is annoyingly frequent. Maybe two or three small framestops every second. The quality is great but this bloody stutter drives me mental![]()
First i convert the .avi to .mpg with TMPGEnc using the project wizard and the suggested settings.
Settings: -SVCD -> PAL (live in Europe)-> VBR 1600kbps -> Non Interlaced / field order: top field first / 1:1 VGA (i know those setting shifts depending on the .avi).
Then a burn the .mpg with the latest version of Nero with the SVCD-template. I've tryed to lower the burnspeed to x1 but that doesnt help at all.
Is TMPGEnc's project wizard trying to piss me off or whats the problem?
Would be very greatful for oppinions /m
UPDATE
Here i go again.
Now i will try to explain the problem more in detail.
I've not yet tryed the suggestions from you guys who has answered below, but incase someone reads this - this might help to understand what could be wrong.
I played one of those "stuttering" SVCD's in my stand alone DVD-player and watched it frame by frame. This i how it looked:
N = New Frame
S = Same frame as the one before (doubleframes)
N - N - N - S - N - N - N - S - N - N - N - S - N - N - N - N - N - N - N - N - N -> back to beginning and so on.
Hopefully this helps / m

is the source pal(25 fps)? if not try burn to ntsc as most pal player and tvs support ntsc.

Do you see the "stuttering" particularly on scenes involving a lot of motion?
This was my problem when trying to encode MPEG2 files using TMPGEnc. I found a webpage:
http://pwp.netcabo.pt/0165394101/TMPGEnc_Template.html
There's a lot of helpful info there. In particular, check out the settings on TMPGEnc's Advanced tab. Changing the field order from bottom to top completely got rid of this particular problem for me.
FYI, I capture using a Dazzle DVC-II card.

Hm... the sourcefile im working with right now is 23 fps (?..weird) according to the properties in win explorer.

Romana: The stuttering is all the time but it's most visual during cameramotions.
Thanx for the link. I will check it out and give it a try." Learn from others misstakes. Life is too short to make them all yourself " -
the problem you have is with your dvd player , it does not support SVCD disks.
There is a work around though, convert the svcd mpeg file you have with nero mpeg tools , into an xvcd.
The disk will have the same quality picture and the audio will be perfect.
There are plenty of how to convert to xvcd guides in this forum. -

First of all i totally overlooked the first adjustment... the first choise -in Project Wizard- of either NTSC, NTSC Film and Pal. I didn't know that the sourcefile should deside the selection of format.
In Mpeg Settings in the Advanced-tab i changed the field order to Bottom field first (field b).
Somehow the wizard always want me to use the "Inverse Telecine"-filter. I dont know why but i do know it makes the encoding slower.
I dont have a clue if this is neccesary for ALL files?
If anyone knows wich of those adjustments that made the trick, please tell me 'cause im pretty tired of those loo-ong encodings. Maybe one of those adjustments just slows things down and makes no difference." Learn from others misstakes. Life is too short to make them all yourself " -
if that doesn't fix it... it will most likely be your standalone player. my stand alone stutters when playing svcd's too. it is an XMS-750 that plays anything you throw at it... however variable bitrate x/svcd's dont agree with it. every 20 seconds or so a slight jitter happens, at first i thought it was because i was using nero burning at 32x.... but everytime i saw a jitter i would rewind a couple of seconds and watch the jittery scene again and there was no jitter - thats how i worked out it was the player not the burning software.

Changing the field order was likely the fix for your "stuttering". The wizard checks the file and selects the correct field order for you.

With those adjustments i made everything works perfect, so it's not my DVD-player
But i think my player have problems with the audiosync, somehow. After a while SOME Svcd's get out of sync. But if i stop the movie and return to same place the sound is in sync again." Learn from others misstakes. Life is too short to make them all yourself "
