8mm or Hi8 for capture playback?

I'm planning to transfer my old regular 8mm home videos to DVD via capture with my new DVcam (mini DV, not digital 8) analog pass-though. Since my old 8mm cam died, I'll have to borrow an analog cam to play the tapes back. Will I get better playback quality from a Hi8 camera than from a regular 8m camera?

I just did the same thing to all my old movies. You cant make the 8mm be higher res. no matter what you play it back on. There may be some immeasureable aspect that some geek will come up with to say that you will get better quality using a high8 but after the DVD is complete, I dare anyone to tell the difference on what type of player you used to hookup to your miniDV.

My 8mm cam broke also and had to borrow a friend's High8 machine to hook to my Sony DV. He actually had a home stereo-type version high8 player/recorder (very high end) he used as a VCR. A true friend. Just be sure to use an s-vid cable to maximize quality.

Would I get better quality out of the Hi8 using S-Video rather than composite (assuming plain 8mm tapes). Or will S-video only make a difference with Hi8 tapes?

Since some Hi8mm have a cheap TBC built in them you would be better in finding a good Sony Hi8mm cam or even better a Home deck, I have both Sony 8mm Home deck and a Sony Hi8mm Cam and the 8mm looks some sharper in the Hi8mm just because of all the extra filters and TBC built in it, if you can find an 8mm with the same filters and TBC it should be just as good, good luck in finding one though.
