I just found out about these as I was searching amazon.com for good memorex CD-RWs.There are brands other than sony too who are making this 1.3GB CD-RW.
This is just great!!!! I always wondered If they can do double-layer storage to double DVD's capacity,Why not on CD-Rs too??
Now I'm wondering, will these work on current CD-RW drives or will they make you buy a newer drive to use these? After all with programs like Nero you can overburn like 20 minutes or more on a regular CD-R.And these are suppose to use the same quality laser for burning as normal CD-RWs.

You need a drive like this to use these disks:
http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/0-1095-404-5614619.html
"Alas, the bloom may be off Sony's newest rose in only a few short months. MultiLevel CD, which triples not only CD capacity (up to 2.1GB) but also write speed (meaning we'll have 48X/30X/40X and faster drives), is slated to appear early next year."
(quote from the above review)As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
Darn I was thinking about taking the chance and buying a 1.3GB CD-RW for $5

The 1.3GB disks are not double-layered, but the pits are much shorter the the pre-grove is tighter.
-
"but at least Sony has kept costs competitive. The Sony drive itself retails for $249--slightly more than a standard 12X/10X/32X CD-R/RW drive."
Slightly more?! That's a hell of a lot more than most internal CD-RW drives.Even TDK's latest internal high quality Velocd CD-RW drive,is just $140.$100 after the $40 rebate. -
For $250 you can get a DVD-RW. In another 6 months, you will most likely get it for less than $200. Blank DVD-R are just over $1 now, in 6 months they might be down to 50 cents a piece. 4.7GB disks will take care of almost all video needs at DVD quality. Until HDTV comes around, DVD-R's will be like CD-R's are today for a long time to come.

Ummm,DVD-R's cost about $5-$6 right now.
But yeah I guess by time all this 1.3GB CD-R stuff takes off and gets affordable as current CD-R stuff, the DVD format will be the main thing.Especially since It already has a good head start. -

esbuy and meritline both have 2x media in the $2 range as well.
They aren't Apple discs, but the Primedisc media is damned close, in output quality... I just transcoded and burned SE7EN, and it's spot-on beautiful, on a single Primedisc.-MPB/AZ -
And yes, you can get 1X media at just over $1. $1.30 each for a 50 pack Vivastar disks, and even lower from ESbuy and Meritline.
Current deal at Meritline, $1.09 per DVD-R!!!!! -
Meritline? Please. I've had my last round with them (and all other cheap discs.) He's talking about real (read certified) media. Another of life's lessons: "You get what you paid for."

The nice part of DVD-R's is that they eigther work, or they don't work. As long as they work, why waste money on other disks more expensive that performs the same?
-
Because they don't perform the same on all players. For example I have a few generic discs that play flawlessly in two of my three players, in the third the disc will play and skip, play and skip, every 5 seconds or so. The same files burned back with the same program to a Pioneer disc plays perfectly in all three. I've never had any Pioneer or Apple branded discs skip, freeze, or error in any other way in any DVD player that supports the format. Can't say that's true about the generics, they're too hit or miss.
On a side note, if I were a paying customer for your conversion service, I certainly wouldn't want to be handed a generic DVD-R disc. -
Well when I said $5 for a DVD-R,I was thinking more of DVD-Rs that are out on the market right now and made by good brand names like those 4.7GB memorex DVD-Rs at amazon.com.Not cheap DVD-Rs made be foreign or other companys few have heard of.
Good to know that there are cheaper alternatives -

Where? I've searched the net for hours today and could'nt find a DVD-RW drive for $250 or less.So where are they? -
you can get a dvdr for around $260 now you just have to look for the good deals and the sales.
and about the $1 dvds. they rock. i have burnt over 80 dvds so far and not had a problem with them.
if it doesn't work on the player get a better player ;P but don't rag on 4.5 gig media that you can get for $1. -
use price search feature at www.techbargains.com and search for pioneer A-104. I got one $267 shipped from essential computers (OK, that's more than $250 . . . )

DVD-R for 46p
DVD-RW for 88p
http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/SVP_Communications_Recordable_DVD_Discs_16.html
I've been using them for months and have no problem so far.
Why bother paying more for branded discs when these are 6 times cheaper and why bother paying 3 times more for 2x discs ?
Anyway 1.3GB CDs are DOA.

I think is ridiculous (or whatever it writes, sorry for my english) to release a 1.3gb CD, if its not compatible with the others cd drives.
Why should i buy it?? better to buy a dvd writter. as simple as that. -

So this would've been great had It been compatable with current CD-RW drives. But It ain't so It's not worth It.Better to just go and buy a DVD burner and DVD-Rs for the same price. -

Though most people want products with higher quality standard, they, most of them, buy cheaper things in the end. -
