Hi
I have a NTSC video tape of Men In Black purchased while on holiday in the US.
This plays fine in my JMB video player and my TV is NTSC compatible.
So all is well there then.
The problem is I want to capture it and convert it to VCD.
The capture card I have is a Win TV PCI (European PAL version one of the older ones) and when i play the video through the NTSC compatible video player to the capture card the video becomes distorted.
I know the card is European PAL,Secam and NTSC compatible. (this shows up in it's
properties box). When i switch the source to NTSC there is a stable picture and sound but it's plain black and white.
As an experiment i downloaded Dscaler played the tape and perfect picture and colours but no sound. However it said the tape was PAL60.
I've tried several pieces of capture software AVIIO, Virtualdub and the software that
came with the capture card and all with the same results...stable pic with sound but black and white.
Is there any other capture software that will allow me to select from a greater number
of input formats NTSC,PAL PAL60 etc so i can capture and convert MIB to video CD PAL?
Ideally Dscaler with Virtualdubs capture facilities
Or is there a way for the WinTV card to accept the NTSC tape as is so that a successful capture can be made?
Thanks

Your VCR is not playing the NTSC tape in NTSC mode, it's called Quazi-PAL mode. To play a NTSC video tape , you need a NTSC VCR or a multisystem VCR. What your PAL VCR does is to play the NTSC tape with the original 30 frames per second video, but converting the color from 3.58NTSC to PAL4.43 You might be able to find a combination on your capture card that will allow 60Hz PAL video. Otherwise, you're out of luck.

Thanks to the above answer this leads me to this question...is there any capture
software that can set the input format i need for me?
I know Dscaler has the Pal60 option but i need the capture facilities of VirtualDub or
similar as well .Is there a software package that combines the two or a set of brooktree drivers that will give me more setting options than the WinTV PCI drivers?
Thanks again for any help info
